Dual Monitors
« on: September 24, 2006, 11:39:26 AM »
Gents,
A coworker finally talked me into setting up a dual monitor display at work and I love it.

I definitely have the card and computer for it at home and have been thinking of gettnig a second 19" flatscreen for AH.

Has anyone used this for AH?
Would there be any kind of advantage?
If so, how do you have it set up and what advantages do you get with it?

Thanks

Dual (or more) Monitors have no advantage in AH, as only one monitor will be used for 3D graphics display.  (I went with thriple monitors, so center monitor plays 3D games.)

Not true if you use the Matrox Triplehead2go. It will split one 3840*1024 screen to three lcd's.

AH will support anything -- you just have to edit the video configuration file.

However, what it will look like at that resolution? I can't even guess. AH doesn't really show you "more" at higher resolution, it just chops off the top and bottom to make it fit. I'd imagine you'd be losing a lot of important view area if you used this resolution.

Once you start playing with a dual monitor setup, its hard to use just one.  I get a lot done at work having email and work queue details on one monitor, then other projects on the other one.

I dont have any games that really use multi-monitors.  Falcon 4 has the neat feature than you can go offscreen with the mouse, then back into the game.  This comes in handly since I usually have a few PDFs open for the various procedures for weapons, SAMs and other notes...then mouse back over to the game and click to lock it back in.  I wish Aces High allowed that, so I could type away a fast instant message reply while climbing out, without alt tabbing  :)

3840*1024

I assume this would be spread over three 1280*1024 monitors? (sorry not a pc guy)

Does anyone use this? How is the Game play?

I currently have AH running on two monitors, at 2560x1024.

It works well enough, although the seam in the middle is annoying.

The main problem is that AH presents a square view box that the video card then displays as best it can.

At widescreen resolutions, like mine, or the triplehead, this means that the top and bottom of that box must be cut off to maintain the aspect ratio - this will worsen as the ratio increases.  So, a triplehead will have it worse than my dual monitor solution does.

Now, I get around both problems with the TrackIR, although the TIR requires more vertical travel to cover the up/down range than it would otherwise.

I run winamp in the background, 2nd monitor works great for changing songs on the fly.
