Spec events maps in the MAs?
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:15:35 AM »
I don't fly in the SEA or AvA much these days, but there have always been some really well done maps in there. I don't know if all the setups could easily be modified for 3 sided w@r, but I would think at least a few could be.

Has there been any official consideration given to modding some of those maps for use in the new arenas? Assuming they would work, or could be made to work, it would be nice both to have some more flavor for the MA masses, and also to showcase some more player-created maps.

This isn't my idea, but I hadn't seen any threads in GD about it, and figured this was no worse than most ideas, so I thought I'd slap one up while we were sitting round the campfire, singing kumbaya, and not getting our posts deleted. ;)

I asked one of the CM's during a snapshot(forget which one) why that map could'nt have been an MA map. They said it would kill FR on even the strongest comp's, due to the terrain and extras.

The Karelia Map would be awsome in here!

But why would it hit frame rate on everyone? We have already used the map before, so why would it effect us in the MA's?

Some of the Special Event maps would do very nicely in the new setup.
I mean we actually have more flying in Fri Night Squad ops than Midwar.

I love the Karelia setup, but it does impact performance on lower end systems. I had to reduce some of my vid settings to get the same performance I get on the vanilla MA maps. For the guys with marginal systems... I fear they'd have a hell of a time with it.

We definately need more maps soon. Mindanao is a cool map, but I've been playing on it for 6 years.

If converting some of these maps makes that happen quicker, I say go for it!

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Any of the SEA maps would require massive reworking for them to function properly in an MA. It would be a full-time job, and we're too busy making more SEA maps.

Another problem with SEA maps in an MA environment... SEA maps are almost always made from real-world geography, and real-world geography (usually) does not lend itself to a 3-front war in any kind of balanced and symmetrical way.

That's why all the MA maps look like a pizza or a peace sign or a pinwheel, they need to be that way... Mindy and Baltic excepted.

The large main city in the Karelia Map would be a bomber's dream with all those buildings so tightly packed! Stuka Raid would be fun in there! But your right, with all the detail and such it would be difficult.
BUT... what if we put the V-bases into the main maps? Spacing out the hangers would make it more challenging and the low level tree top bomber dweebs wouldn't be able to hit all three in one strike.  As well as the troop tents? With those side bunkers on them it was somewhat challenge to take them all down.

OH YEAH!!!

This would make V bases a lot more interesting.

I see you guys are a step ahead of me. Even having some of the features or visual details from some of the SEA/AvA maps would be interesting. Anything aside from water, green hills, and trees would be a welcome change.

I really like the idea of using some of the custom field setups on the MA maps, but I'm thinking that would require a lot of debugging, unless the base tiles are all standardized sizes. I don't pretend to know anything about the editor, other than that it pisses me off.

HTC's system is that they don't use any players' custom objects with the MA-maps. Even if the designers are from the Terrain Team.

There are many reasons why not: for ex. the custom objects as which Karelia contains very much are really killing the frame rates and those objects don't always work correctly in the game. I understand HTC's politics very good.

But thank you for your nice words from the Karelia terrain! I hope it runs good with everyones' computer after 1-2 years ... :)

We don't need everything from the  Karelia terrain. Just the V bases.

What about the main airfields?  I am sure with just those there and the V-bases would be a nice change of view.  I liked the airfields in the Karelia terrain.  Was fun just landing on dirt like the old days!  But these were just big and round.... I could get lost going in a circle!!
