Kev! That silver Polish W/C Spit
« on: September 26, 2006, 01:24:11 PM »
I finally got the info,

It was the mount of W/Cdr Marian Duryasz who was with HQ 2 TAF on the continent.  How it became silver is a long story that apparently will be published in Aeroplane Monthly in the near future :)

So here it is.  It's really an LFIX, but what the heck.  How bout putting it on the XVI since that's just an LFIXe anyway :)

The codes and serial are confirmed from photos.  D is reproduced under the nose as well.

It would complete the silver Spits collection

3 things -

a) Was unsure if 2 or 3 color upper roundels.
b) Used std placing for stbd side sqn codes.
c) In game 'tag' in hanger - HQ 2TAF ????

2 color upper that I'm aware of.  This was strictly a paint job done 'on the sly'

Photos show standard placement for the MB-D on the right side so you got it right.  HQ 2 TAF would be correct.  The WingCo was attached there.

The jist of the story is that it was found by another RAF WingCo attached to the USAAF abandoned at a forward strip.  He got help to get it working and took it with him.  This was mid summer 44.  In the Fall he got nervous that he might be found out as another WingCo had apparently been court-martialed for having an unrecorded aircraft of his own.

At this point the original 'owner' got the Spit painted silver to hide it's identity.  This was Fall 44.  In early 45 he gave it to the Polish WingCo who added his initials etc.  The Polish WingCo then used it well into 46.
