I might take a run down from Irvine, wife permitting.

And while its a relatively short drive down from Laguna, its a hell of a trek from Peterborough. What you doing over in this part of the world Sparks?

If you're going to go, get there really early and make sure you bring along plenty of sunscreen and water.

I went to it about 14 or 15 years ago.  My buddy's father was a marine pilot that was killed in a training accident similar to the one that killed Goose in "Top Gun" when he was 4 or 5 years old.  Since then, the marines have taken care of his mother very well... they always send her tickets and invitations to events as well.  We got front row seats to the airshow.  The year I was there, a Marine Hornet crashed right in front of the intire crowd trying to do a loop to low to the ground.  The wife of the pilot was sitting right next to us... a jeep came up and took her away after the crash. it was very sad.

Miramar has a good rep of being one of the "good" airshows.  I grew up 5 miles from Miramar and went to the airshow every year for about a decade.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
