Author Topic: Socket 775 bent pins? (Read 269 times)

When I took my P5P800 out recently and put the new mobo in, a split second before I put the plastic protective cover over the empty CPU socket, a fingernail accidentally caught a pin.

I don't know the damage, but I can see a disruption in the pattern of pins. It looks like just 1 pin. I need a magnifying glass to see if it's bent, broken, or ripped out. If it's just bent I'm hoping an X-acto knife point can push it back into place. I work on models so I'm decent at small stuff.

I want to put this motherboard in my sister's PC. She needs the upgrade badly and I bought a socket 775 CPU so she could use it. The problem is, how likely is it that I'll be able to salvage this?

Is this a common accident? Is there any way a warranty will cover this? It was working fine with no problems before my fingernail went postal.

I'll have to snag a cheap magnifying glass somewhere, I don't know if I have one in the house. I hope it's not ruined.

Hey Krusty,
I've never bent the pins, but it must be a common
problem because PC magazine online has several
articles about fixing bent pins. The suggestion is
to take a 7mm or 5mm mechanical pencil and use
it to bend the pin back.

whew! What a relief!

The mobo is only 6 months old, and has lots of life left.

i had a cpu that i aquired that had been steped on ... yes steped on

about 1/4er of the pins were bent .

i used the ink tube out of a pen and carefully bent the pins back
tossed it in a mb and fired it up . worked great . It got donated to a needy family about 2 yrs ago and is still working to this day . (850 athlon i think it was)

Got a magnifying glass from the store, and used it on the pins. It turns out just one pin got hooked under my nail (the angle was just right) and bent upwards and a little to the side. All I had to do was nudge it a little back to its original position, and I'm good as new now!
