Initialization failed with -3

When I try to run AH from Win95, right after I choose video preferences, I get a message:

Initialization failed with -3
mainGR3D_FAILED -3

I've installed DirectX 7.0a. My system:
- Intel Pentium 133
- Diamond Stealth 2001 Video (1MB RAM)
- 72 MB RAM

Same problem occured to my friend on NT with SP6. He owns Pentium 500 with 392 MB RAM, SiS on board graphic adapter with 8 MB RAM.

I beleive the problem lies in what video preferences you are selecting.

That system is very slow, and a video card with only 1 mb of RAM is not going to be able to run much.

Be sure to choose 16 bit colour and the lowest resolution available.

Even then, I'm not sure your machine is capable of running the game.  If it does run, it surely will not run very fast.  It's long past time for an upgrade if you plan to play games on your computer.

The stated minimum requirements for Aces High are:

Windows 9.x
DirectX 7.0a recommended
D3D compatible video card
PII 233 or Pentium MMX or better
Sound card and speakers

The machine you are trying to run it on does not meet the processor or video card requirements in this case.

Yup..

That video card wont cut it in AH,minimum has to be 4 Meg card capable of D3D.

The error is Hardware acceleration is off on the card. But still, that card is a far to old to run AH..

The problem does not seem to be connected to choosing video preferences, since it comes up wiht any chosen preferences.

I agree my machine is ancient, but it is capable of displaying 640x480 with 16 bit depth.

But explain this: My friend is getting the same error message on an NT desktop which is much more up-to-date (500 MHz Pentium, SiS 6326 video with 8 MB RAM and 392 MB System RAM).

The reason for your friend's error message is that WinNT does not support a Direct X version new enough to run AH.  (AH does not officially support WinNT either.)

Win2000 does now work with AH though.

In DX there is an area to enable/disable Hardware Acceleration This must be enabled or AH will give the error message.
