Screen freeze/bounce to desktop

I am getting a screen freeze at any time.  Sometimes it can be 1 minute after entering or it can be 1 hour.  Seems the screen goes to a deeper color and then freezes.  It does this with or without RW.  Most of the time when it freezes the sound is still going or RW is still working.  I have to push "big" button to get out.  It doesn't matter what my connection is either....has done it when I have had a great connection.  I have the latest drivers for components.  Sometimes I get bounced to the desktop also......what the heck is doing this? Also run scandisk(after lockups), and defrag every other day...
