That doesn't look like a D pony...look at the canopy. And unless I'm mistake, there's only a pair of .50 cal openings in the wing, not 3.

Yes its easier to see on the RL pic. Looks like a bubblish canopy with 4 .50cals. Maybe a Mustang Mk. 3?

The AH P51D is McWherters D model. The photo is McWherters earlier B model. Both 363rd FG. Same guy had at least a couple of 51s with that name.
