Task Manager Programs/Macros?
« on: November 10, 2006, 11:55:53 AM »
I was curious if there were any programs/macros, etc., that are available for shutting down all those processes listed in Task Manager I have to always disable before starting Aces High.  You know, those processes that unnecessarily gobble up unneeded resources or that will minimized the game right in the middle of a heated dogfight.

It would certainly be convenient as you loaded Aces High II for all these unnecessary processes to be shutdown.  Even if you had to go to a single "site" that could globally shutdown a preset series of processes in Task Manager would be great.

I know there must something out there, but I have yet to find it.  Actually, what brought this to mind was one of our squad members thought that he  had  remembered something along these lines.

Anxiously awaiting a response.........LOL......rea lly I am........

You want a program called "EndItAll" which PC Magazine published a few years ago.

By default it manages to kill pretty much EVERY background task on a PC, including those that are normally tough to end. By saving profiles, you can have it leave a few key apps, like your joystick remapper and such.

This page has download links.

Anyone ever compare FSAutostart and Enditall?  I know FS was originally designed for MS Flight Simulator but otherwise the descriptions of both seem pretty much the same.  I use FS but there are a couple of idiosyncracies that I don't like.  For instance, when I lose connection and AH shuts down FS will automatically start bringing up all the processess it shut down.  You can't just interupt it and restart AH so you have to wait for everything to start back up and then begin the process again.  I haven't found a way to disable the auto restart on exiting from AH.  Also, there are a few processes that FS just doesn't seem to be able to deal with, primarily my McAfee security suite which I have to disable manually.

Edit: just noticed Enditall doesn't list WinXP as a supported system.

Well unlike FS autostart enditall won't restart anything. Kill something with enditall and it stays dead till you restart. Also there is a big difference between different versions of enditall. There was a newer version out there but it didn't stay long.

But then myself I get by mostly by staying very clean on boot.
Years & years of running win98se taught me that allowing stuff to start & stay resident on startup was not a good idea.

msconfig  in conjunction with some research to find out what processes are vital and which can be stopped pays off with a lean machine.

Nobody uses gool old built-in msconfig anymore?

I create a "game" user account, kill everything at start up possible with msconfig, game out as usual.

Start>> run>> type msconfig >> enter

But doesn't MSCONFIG require you to reboot every time you want to play and then reboot again when you're done?  Seems like a lot of wasted time.

Mace, the idea with Msconfig is to set it up once so that you always boot clean. Don't let anything start with windows thats not essential.  If your really concerned about running bare, use Marine's idea. Switch users back & forth.

Once you get msconfig set right reboot once,  check to make sure everything works that you need to work, then leave it alone. Granted I don't have a printer attached, my wife's machine has the printer. Anything I need to print I simply copy across the network & let her machine print it.

I'm currently running 23 processes and thats with Firefox up.
(Windows XP Pro SP2)
CPU usage with Firefox up & me typeing runs between 0 - 2 %.

I have precisely 3 things running in my system  tray.
Sound Volumn, AVG antivirus, and skype. And I could do without the skype if needed. The AVG is there because its setup to virus scan & update every night at 3:00 am. That way I don't have to worry about it.

There are a lot of programs that are designed to start up on windows start.
Thats not to say they HAVE to, thats just the way they are designed.
They can still be started from an icon on desktop, or start/programs.
They just won't sit there and be memory & process hogs when they are not being used.
