Your character in TOD has attributes such as strength, stamina, perception, luck, etc., that govern various abilities such as G tolerance, stick forces, icon distances, effect of pilot wounds and more. As you gain promotions, you also gain additional attribute points to assign as you see fit. In this way, you can customize the abilities of your character to best suit your own particular combat style. In addition to your pilot gaining abilities, your plane can receive some additional benefits by your ground crew as well.
This sounds to me an awful lot like an application of Role Playing Game (RPG) principles to a flight sim. And in RPGs, if your character dies...he's dead. (Umless you're playing one of those "gnomes and fairies" ones with revive potions...but no self respecting AH'er would run around in tights and pointy ears!)
HT has also talked about CT being a totally different experience, with real in game consequences that change flight behavior. (Dont remember if that was in the CT forum or the convention.)
In short, I'd bet that the possibility of death -- and loss of a character you've incvested so much in -- will be a major part of CT. While that may seem like a pain at first, think of what it will do to suicide buffing and HO attacks!
