« on: November 15, 2006, 06:41:47 PM »
I have bought a new joystick, downloaded about 4 times, still can not play. I have a computer plenty good enough ( 2.66 GHZ), updated all my drivers, still get a white screen when I execute the game. It is also running my CPU up to 100%. This killing me. I am off for a few days, can't play.------------------

Rdenni, your system specs are actually on the low end for this flight sim. 480mb Ram is barely enough in fact. But, your dxdiag report doesn't show what you are running for a video card.

Please post the next block in the report that shows the video card as well.

It sounds like it is a driver issue with our video card. If that's all it is there is enough knowledge here to get you going.

Also aces high will use 100% of your CPU, so any non essential programs you have running in the background will hinder performance. Typically you can get XP down to 20-25 running processes before launching AH.

Anyway, get our video card info posted and we'll go from there.

cheers,
RTR

Not enough?   Ram 480..

I had trouble with 512 then i upgraded to 2 gig.

Could also be a video or sound card issue to.

Maybe one of the guys that actually know something about computers will help.

not enough info, need type of vid card. list about 1st 3rd of dxdiag list.

initially though, looks like you dont have much ram, if you are preloading textures and skins, then you would need atleast 1 gig. so if you are preloading then you need to not.
also what textures are you trying to run? 256, 512, 1024? therse are set on clipboard on initial startup screen, video settings.

let us know and have patience, all the guys and gals on this forum are very helpful, they will get you going.

I do not think this computer has a great "video card". If I upgrade the video card, will that also upgrade the RAM. Here is the DX log. Thanks for you guys helping, I used to play Air Warriors long ago, this looks much better.
Thanks,
Ron
I found the only thing I could with Video on the DX log. The driver for the video is SIS 651. I think this is just a plain video card.

When yoiu do the DxDiag thing, run the video and sound tests, then save the info into a plain .txt file. Then post the top third of that text, we really need to see it all.
A video card will not increase your system ram, two different things.
I do run AH with 512Mb of system ram but I do not run skins and have not increased my texture size.

This is what we need from DxDiag:

looks like onboard sis graphics .

 Card name: SiS 651
Manufacturer: SiS
Chip type: SiS 651 Rev 00
DAC type: Internal
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_6325&SUBSYS_027DA0A0&REV_00
Display Memory: 32.0 MB

i dont think anyone has gotten that chipset to work in ah2 .

see what you have is a word processer type computer .. shure its got good cpu speed and enough ram .. but it falls down in the video department .

if you have a agp / or pci express graphics port inside on your mainboard you could install a "gaming" type video card and have a decient gammer then.

Thanks for your help. I looked to see if the computer has any extra PCI slots. It does. What video card do you recommend?

The SIS 651 graphics controller isn't going to work.

But, you say you have an open PCI slot. I was using a gforce 5200 FX card a while ago and it was playable, but was still very low performance. I think you can still get this card. Or,  I believe you can get a gforce 5600 in PCI as well. (would be a bit better than the 5200).

A new card won't increase your system RAM, but you should be able to add another 128 or 512MB of system Ram pretty cheaply.

good luck.

cheers,

Nvidia makes a FX 5200 and a FX 5500 in PCI configuration.  4 generations old now, but they work.  ATI's 9200/9250 can be had in PCI configuration as well.  Personally I'd recommend the Geforce FX 5500 with 256 MB of video RAM, and add anothter 512 of system memory to your computer.  Should be plenty to play AH with no problems.

And if you use the FX5xxx seires of video card, please save yourself some headaches and use the 61.77 NVidia drivers.  If you like frustration then use the latest drivers from NVidia for a 5xxx seires video card.
