Is anybody shooting IPSC matches?
« on: November 14, 2006, 08:54:24 AM »
I've done a training IPSC-like session last saturday and I've had a blast.

I did it with my personal Glock 17 (I know, factor minor, booooh!) and I didn't made a fool out of myself. Although I need to learn to shoot faster and shoot while moving.

I was curious to know if OCers had experience in this type of shooting.

I shoot IDPA mostly.  Done a couple of IPSC matches, but due to locality shoot IDPA regularly.  I also make a point of attending Glock Sport Shooting Foundation matches as often as possible.  They are all great fun and alot of good people participating!  I usually compete with a Glock34, but have been known to get out the Glock 26 for some practice with the baby Glock.

Enjoy!

I shot IPSC for five year up to the day the range closed do to some bad neighbors that bought a couple high price lawyers in dripping springs Texas. I told the founder when he bought the property almost two years ago that they were going to have a problem but he didn't listen. I own a ranch and I can understand why they would have been angry about having a range next door. They had matches every weekend 3 gun sounded like ww2 .223 with muzzle brakes are loud....

At first i shot a STI edge in limited 10 then started to shoot stock class G35. Great fun but the new range is so far away i am not going to drive 1/2 the day just to shoot 200 rounds.

We never had any official matches, sanctioned by anyone where something is won, but we did have IPSC like department competitions.. under the guise of "training" so it was all paid for...  the "Gas Co" range was the live fire training, but the dorks from LAPee wee, er I mean LAPD rolled a patrol car into a ditch, and shot up a few black & whites by accident... we never let em off the hook for that.

We used to also bring targets of little kids holding ice cream or lollypops.. to harass the School police.

We used our Dept issues S&W 645 .45s, MP5s, AR-15.. anything we had in the armoury, as Borat would say "Sexy time", all day spent shooting at stuff, diving in the dirt, driving around blasting targets from inside the unit... getting paid time 1/2..

I also went through the Orange , LA and Riverside counties Sheriffs IPSC motivated lazer villages, which we all amazingly fun. Not live fire though. The OC laser village is state of the art complete with cars, buildings and Marines from Pendleton as role players... Marine MPs were also training with us.

Heres what the OC laser village looks like:
http://www.clui.org/clui_4_1/ondisplay/emergency/exhibit/es7.html

During training, the streets are full of role players... with "teh bad guy" somewhere in the mix, we got into some crazy "OK corral" shoot outs that were fun.

There was a reporter from the San Gabriel Valley Trib at the OC laser village who shot everyone, kids, old ladies, even an old yeller looking dog... but the armed suspect. At one point you're entering a ghetto apartment and a kid pops out pointing an x-box like controller at you, the reporter shot him in the face ... oops.

WTG!  How have you done in your matches?  Any thoughts of taking SO training and helping out on the COFs?

My inexperience with semi-autos shows.  Basically I suck lol.  But time at the range is improving my score.  I lose alot in the transitions.  Plus my 1911 isnt at all customized, everything is factory stock and things stick sometimes (especially after 80 or 90 rounds).  I try to set aside one afternoon a week to go to the range and just target shoot at 10-20 yds.

I do better shooting in the revolver class, but only one other guy in the club is even setup to shoot revolvers and I hate slowing the others down.  I can only carry 3 speedloaders, and loading by hand is sloooooooooow.

They are talking about having a 3 gun match (IPSC style), so its time to customize the SKS a bit so it will be competitive.  The others all have AR-15s.  :(
