I have sort of the same problem.  May also affect you.

My soundblaster 16 needs to be on IRQ #5 to work properly and I have a cable modem as my internet service.

I have 2 different enternet cards.

Everytime I install either ethernet card Windows 2000me kicks my sound card from IRQ #5 and puts it somewhere else and put the ethernet card there.

If I manually set the ethernet card to a different IRQ setting, windows puts a "!" circle on it in DEVICE MANAGER, plus some parts of it still wants to use IRQ #5.

I can still fly in aces high but sometimes computer locks up while entering aces high or even in it.

So I don't if any of this information helps you or not.

The A7V (not sure about a7v-e) works best if you put the sound card in pci slot 3 and reserve a legacy irq for it under PCI configuration in the bios.  I would also HIGHLY recommend updating the bios to the newest revision available.

I'd also do an uninstall and reinstall of your soundcard drivers.  (Get newest version, Creative's drivers tend to be buggy overall  :( )  I would then run the setup for DX 8a at that point as well.

I've reserved a legacy IRQ for my card and put it in in slot 3 already, to no avail.  :(

It seems quoite a few others have this problem with VIA KT133 chipset motherboards and SBLive! cards, as evidenced by this thread on the VIA tech forums.

Try pulling out your sound card and see if you can play the game.  If that works, see if you can find a different sound card, or buy a different one if you can afford it.

You DEFINATELY had a problem before with the sound card in PCI 1, that one shares with your AGP slot.

Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools and choose "System Information".

Now in the left pane, expand Hardware Resources, and then click on IRQs.  Copy the results  and paste them in a message here for starters.  We'll see from there.

Oh, and you should definately be using the Detonators for that thing.  http://dangerousdog.com/downloads/dets/index.htm   I'm not sure which ones are the best on 98, but I'd start with the latest "official" ones, the 12.41's.
