5.1

Quick question here, does AH support 5.1 sound?  I've got an SB Audigy 2ZS and just recently got around to hooking up a 5.1 system but don't get any sound from the rear speakers in AH.  Nothing about it in the help and setup and I've only seen one post that mentioned the poster thought AH supported surround sound.  Any ideas?

The game uses sound positioning, but not Dolby 5.1.

Make sureyou set your speaker configuration to a 5.1 speaker system in Windows.  By default, Windows is set for a stereo speaker configuration.

Thanks Skuzzy.

I have seen the sound positioning work but only with stereo.  I double checked and do have 5.1 in Windows and tested the speakers and they worked fine except in AH.  No sound at all from the back.

With the sound positioning feature should I be able to hear something behind me from the rear speakers (i.e., "surround sound").  For example, a tank drives a circle around me.  Would I hear the sound move from front left, rear left, rear right, front right or are we basically looking at left/right only with the rears just repeating the front?

I don't know why it wouldn't work with 5.1 surround, but I have a 4 speaker + subwoofer system that provides directional sound in AH without a problem.

If you have the EAX control panel, make sure something isn't set there that over rides the surround sound. And make sure both windows and the Audigy are both set to the same speaker system type. Once in a blue moon, when I install something the windows setting will change on mine but the Audigy stays set properly.

Or switch the speakers to quadraphonic mode and see if that works.

Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Thanks NHawk, you got it right.  My system was switching back to 2.1 when I started AH for some reason.  I went back and reselected and now it's working correctly.  Guess I'll just have to ride herd on it to see if it happens again.
