A Finnish Bf 109 G-6
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:06:02 PM »
Here is my newest one: a Finnish Air Force Bf 109 G-6/R6. This skin is dedicated to Mr. Antti Tani, a FAF WWII veteran, and a fine gentleman, he is still alive!

This W.Nr 165274, coded MT-453 by the FAF, served in 1./HLeLv 34 (Fighter Squadron 34), and was based in Taipalsaari during the soviet summer offensive in 1944.

The aircraft was named to Sergeant-Major Osku Länsivaara and had a tactical number "White 11" painted on both sides of the fuselage, just in front of the cockpit.

MT-453 was credited with 5 victories in WWII. Of the five victories three were soviet Il-2 Sturmoviks, all shot down in a sigle battle by Sergeant-Major Antti Tani on July 1st 1944.

And here's the one and only photo I have when making it:

just noticed...the band around tail in photo looks dark....is that yellow?

I really dont know, but seems odd to be that dark in photo...heck it looks the same as spinner in photo.

Yes, and if you look closely you'll see the same color under the nose, and maybe under the wingtips (they're in shadow, though).

Often the old black and white film had strange ways of displaying colors. Different chemicals made different colors show up dark or light. It could be anything from yellow to red to blue to ______ (fill in the blank). However, he already knows the color for the Finnish tail bands was yellow, so using his existing knowledge he can say "well, that must mean that band is yellow, and that makes the nose yellow too!" Deductive reasoning

Yes, they are yellow. I don't remember the film's name, but this film is that type which shows all yellows as black!

Finland has only Bf 109 G2 and G6 types and couple of those which could also be G14's but without water methanol injection.

S!

Finns did have 2 x Bf109G-6/AS without the MW50 system installed. One was lost in war the other flew after war. They had the bigger DB603 charger and different engine hood.  Finland also had a couple of Bf109G-8's (photorecon) but as there were no cams available they were used as normal fighters. Practically G-8 did not differ from G-6.
