hi all, FIRST let me apologize now for the length of this post...........buuutttt...... ..
i have a fairly general question here.......hoping to get some advice from it, and if nothing else just enough info to make an informed descision.

i live in south new jersey, and am on the internet through verizon DSL. the machine i'm presently playing on is an AMD athalon, with 512mb ram, and a radeon 9600SE video card, with 128mb. i don't know what the front side bus is or how to find it. it has, as i stated the athalon processor which is 1.9GHZ i'm using a westell wirespeed ethernet modem connected through a linksys wired router(so i can have both puters connected). when i'm playing the game, i go to task manager and close all processes that i can, leaving only 27 running. at this point, before i log into the game, it reports only 190 or so mb used. when i enter the game, and am flying, as i take off, i get about 19-23FPS. as i climb out, and get into the sky, it goes to 25-35 depending on what i'm looking at. in combat it stays around 23-25FPS.......unles that fight comes down to the deck.......now that there's trees and hills, FPS drops to 16 or less. when i hit CTRL I so i can see the display, it shows vid mem usage at about 43mb or so, and ram at 435mb or so(they both seem to vary).on the above setup i'm using MS sidewinder 2 force feedback.
the new machine i'm trying to set up for this is an acer with the intel processor, running 3.1GHZ. it has 1 gig ram, and GEFORCE6600 video card with 256mb of its own ram. now here's the problem. in the clear blue, i have better FPS than the older machine, but when i get down near the deck, i don't even need to be in combat.........this is SLOWER.....at 1FPS. on this machine i close all i feel safe to close, but the new one has 31 processes running, and about 225mb being used before i log intot he game. i went to a couple sites to check my connection speed, and it reports back at 721KPBS download, and only 125 or so KBPS upload. i've talked to guys in here that have the same setup as me, and less video ram, and maintain 25+FPS where i'm gettin 11-18FPS.
now the question.....what are most of you guys and gals running for internet hookups? do i have to go to cable to get the better performance? this seems to go hand in hand with the fact that i keep gettin kilt while i'm watchin the nmy goin by me and he has NO shot..in my view........

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!

internet connections would more than likely give you discos, and warping as your computer tries to update the info with the host computer thru a crappy connection.

As your not complaining about that.... yet

we'll go on about your computer. 31 processes is a lot. I get mine down to 14 before launching the game. FSAutostart is a great program in that it can be setup to shut down processes, and then after you leave the game it will turn them back on for you. Also, should you turn the wrong thing off, rebooting your computer returns it to the way it was before running the autostart program, so you really can't screw it up.

The numbers you see on the screen aren't nessisarily correct as far as us layman see them. we may see that we have plenty of space left but the tech guy see it different.

As for your machine, its not bad, but you may be pushing it too hard. What resolution are you using, texture size, are you preloading anything in the game? Do you have anti-alising turned on or off for your video card? With your set-up Id run the 512 textures, no anti-alising, water off. Also, you might want to post the first third or so of your DXdiag here and let the gurus look at it. Sometimes the newest drivers are NOT the best drivers.

I ONLY SEE WARPS ONCE INAWHILE..............my prob is that i'm shooting when i KNOW hist should be scored, but they're not........and i get hit when there is ABSOLUTLEY NO angle for the nmy......in MY view, which is obviously wrong////////

Disable that "Modem #0" thing as a sound card. That should help.

Also, check the number of background processes running on that computer. Look in the "Task Manager" *Ctrl-Alt-Del), select the "Processes" tab, and note the total in the lower left corner. It should be between 19 and 21, for a normal Windows XP installation.

The take a look at the CPU usage to the right of the total number of processes. It should be bouncing between 0 and 1 (possibly 2) percent like a heartbeat. Watch it for a minute or two.

My best guess, after the "Modem #0" thing, is there are too many processes running eating up the CPU cycles causing performance degradation.

Skuzzy, I've had this since day one with my system. There is no driver shown in dxdiag to disable. Any ideas where to find and disable it?

LOL! Now if it were that simple don't you think I would have found it by now?

No modem device (emulated or otherwise) listed in HW manager, and no driver shown in DX.

Quite a while ago I tried just removing it from the registry, but it came back. So, it's one of those things I just live with until some guru can tell me where it is.

No driver, as it is being emulated in Windows. Odd. Those silly things are usually found in the Multimedia stuff in the hardware manager.

thanks skuzzy!!! my question now, is how/where do i disable it?

and yet ANOTHERR question........right now, i'm typing this on the newer computer, as the other one suddenly won't let me log on.........it appears as though my ethernet card has taken a dump.............the light on it still lights, but no connection.........could that have been causing problems too?
