Problems with joystick
« on: November 27, 2006, 12:18:08 PM »
I have a Logitech Extreme 3D joystick that has started to act strange.  I downloaded the latest game patches, but have found the elevators of the planes no longer function well...bombers, fighters, even field guns and ground vehicles up-and-down motion.  I've calibrated the joystick several times, and have gone into the advanced Map Controller screen to try enance the sensitivity and response.  No Luck.

What happens is when I use the elevator, it sorta flutters a little but doesn't change the angle of attack of the plane.  When I adjusted the response rates, etc, all it did was make the elevator twitchy to the point that I could no longer the plane at a predicatible angle...couldn't train gun sights, couldn't land without crashing and couldn't pull out even a moderate dive.  The ailerons are fine as is the rudder.

I began to blame the joystick, but saw that one of the last game patches was supposed to deal with a problem much like I have described.  Any suggestions?

So, you can pull full deflection, and the elevators just don't work? Have you gone into the "map controllers" screen, selected the axis, hit the "advanced" checkbox, and watched as you move the stick?

Does the green marker on the axis slider move all the way up and down?

There's a chance it might just be a setting, but there's an equally good chance the stick is going. You have one of the lowest quality and shortest-lasting brands out there. I know. I've had them before too (many folks here have).

We can help you to see if it's just a setting or not, but I think I need a better description of what the problem is.

EDIT: Oh, this may sound obvious, but calibrate it in windows. See if it moves around properly in that screen. Then once done, calibrate it inside Aces High, as well!

Thanks for the advice.  I had played around with the Advanced window as you had said, but didn't think to look at the green bars as I wiggled the joystick around.  I know the stick I have is cheap...it was on sale, what can I say?

I'll check out the green bars this evening.  In the mean time, is there a better stick I should be looking at?

In the lower price range (20-30 USD), check out the Saitek 290 (sometimes you can get that at Walmart). Its a pretty good stick, in the long run lacking buttons though.

If you can afford around 100-120 USD (Christmas?) and plan on sticking with this game/flight sims for a bit, the next best thing you can do is a Saitek X52 (with twisty rudder) or a X45 (stiffer springs, rocker rudder that needs getting used to).

The best out there is still a full CH gear. Stick, throttle and pedals have you looking at 300-350 USD though. Big plus (aside from the fine control) is the durability. CH is said to "last a lifetime".

I myself got myself a X45 beginning of this year. Added pedals to that not long ago. Im very happy with this setup now, but in the long run (as my monetary situation allows) i plan on replacing the Saitek stuff one by one with CH gear.
21 is only half the truth.

I also have a logitech extreme 3d pro.  It still works as well as it ever has so no changes since the patch.

as well as before means- every time I enter the game i have to recalibrate the rudder and sometimes the the other axisesssssssssss(?) as well.

sometimes I suspect my rudder is flapping around while im flying (thats what I blame my bad sorties on)

If you have the resources and time to get to a store go ahead and get a better stick.  (im just too obstinate to change out till it really takes a dump)

:furious

someday I'll get the CH pedals etc ... to match my helmet and goggles I wear now when I fly!:D
