Please add torps to the destroyer escorts
« on: November 27, 2006, 02:50:19 PM »

Also to make it so when the CV is sunk, give the commander the option to "retire", respawning the CV back at the port as it is now, or to "patrol", which would change the formation for the ships from Anti-aircraft, to Line Astern. DEs in front, and the CA in the middle, remaining DEs in rear

DE  DE  CA  DE  DE   ---->

Once patrol is chosen, no spawning of pts or lvts is allowed.

The torpedo station would be another gun position available on the hanger screen for the DE. A simple aim and shoot view could be used, with traverse.

Adding the torps would allow some offensive capability against other fleets, and would make the possibility of night ops in scenarios against surface ships really interesting.

You'd need to add the ability to manually con the ship (rudder and speed control), optics for the torps, and a torpedo computer, to really make it reasonably realistics.  However, for now, just spawn pt boats.  Personally, I'd rather see them make the front and rear main gun turrets man-able.  That would really give ship-to-ship more punch, and something to do when your cruiser and CV go down.

Better yet, make the DDE a perked ride, with all guns man-able, direct helm control, and torps.  That would be real cool!

The problem here is that it'd be abused. If the current system were used, you'd have unlimited torps to spray everywhere. Run out of torps, tower, rinse, repeat.

If they added a system of torp limiting, a griefer would come along and fire all the torps into the sunset before the fleet made it into combat.

Adding a system to stop the griefers would be too complicated.

The torps on the US destroyers were'nt reloadable. The IJN could, but these look more like Rudderow DEs.

But there's the problem. Griefers come by and fire the torpedos at the coastline or their friends in PT boats or just fire them in random directions to be arses and you're up a creek with no torpedos anyway.

Here's a suggestion...

To prevent (or at least limit) the greifers, reserve the torpedo firing position to whoever had active command of the fleet at the time.

Or, as a second option, give the fleet commander a .torp "name" command to specify who has torpedo control.

Like anything new, when first released you'll have everyone fighting to try it out in game, and some will greif.

But, after the novelty wears off, the "immediate gratification crowd" will go back to easier and less time consuming tasks like writing their name in waypoints, vulching, and porking un-defended bases.
