Many directors that win best director Oscars are overrated, as are the writers who win Best Screenplay. Movies that earn all 3, however, did something right, and in a big way. Like it or not, this movie did many thnigs right, and rightfully earn Costner a place as a movie maker.

On a personal note: I saw it, and although I was not always drawn into the character's plight, I can say, without a doubt, that it was visually impressive, that its production values were on par with the best, and that suspension of disbelief was total. It was a big, impressive movie that many people enjoyed and will continue to enjoy despite what the director did in his subsequent career.

Just saying.

I liked "Dances with Wolves" and Im not a huge Costner fan.

the only part I didnt like about it was the white woman.
The Way the Indians were portrayed was great

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but although I'm not a Tom Cruise fan Vanilla Sky is a film I can watch over and over again.  It is so multi-layered that I catch something new every time I see it.  It was critically panned and most people didn't like it but I thought it was brilliant.

Biggest recent let down was King Kong. I expected so much more from Peter Jackson.

I'm also wondering who had the bright idea that Jack Black could act in a more "serious" role.

As for "Contact," wasn't the book written similarly to the movie. IIRC, there were more people on the machine, but there weren't any slimy aliens.

Oh yeah, Independence Day...........

Ok, making something new that Orson Wells did decades ago, they kill the aliens with a virus, wait.....a computer virus.  One question....
What did they do, corrupt their .exe files?  Were they running Windows?

I can't get a mac to talk to a pc, and they just up an created a virus that will infect alien computers?

Moving along......

If the death star could destroy a planet, why did they have to wait until the moon was out of the way to destroy the planet in Star Wars?  Why didn't they blow up the moon?

If Gandolf could summon those big prettythang eagles at the end to save Frodo and Samwise, couldn't he have saved everyone a lot of walking and summoned them at the beginning to drop the dam ring in the volcano from the air?

I kept looking at Black and kept thinking Chris Farley.

Black fit that role like an abortion clinic in the Vatican

Saw a couple of outtakes on the net. One was pretty funny...the cheese thingy:

Borat: What's this?
Supermarket guy: Cheese
Borat: and what's this?
Supermarket guy: Cheese

repeat 100x :D

The movie wasn't worth the price of a small popcorn.

You're not ByeBye.  There are some very funny parts in it.  The arms negotiation being one.

Angus, I like "soft Disney."

Disney is good.  Pinocchio -- 101 Dalmatians -- Snow White

Regards,

hap

p.s. Mrs. Miniver also good --> very good for family viewing esp given the armed conflict we wage.  Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce Holmes and Watson -- good.
