Fighting the ground war
« on: December 09, 2006, 09:26:21 PM »
Can somebody give me a tip or two on fighting in a tank....I've been dabbling in ground warfare(mostly blowing up towns) Everything goes great until I encounter another vehicle...then I mysteriously die, well there isn't much mystery really, my tank is hit by a ap round and I explode. I have the views figured out,  that made a HUGE differance. It just seems that most of the time though, I start my engine drive ten feet and get killed. Am I missing something? any help would be great.

there really isn't much of a ground war going on in AH. For the most part its just a spawn camping war.  A few of the maps will have a battle ground or two, minadao has that one base north of A4 that is alway fought for, the island map has the "tank town", but thats about it.

Spotting the enemy is the key. Finding a spot to sit in with your engine off looking for tanks to roll in is the way to do it. Hitting a tank between the 1st and second, or second and third wheel for the kill shot is the best place to hit.

Most people will take a direct route from a spawn point to a base, and sitting along side of that route in a clump of trees is a good plan. Another thing Ive seen done is to bomb a VH to kill it, bail from your plane, up a GV and race to the spawn point to wait for the VH to reopen. This way your in place waiting for the spawner to become the target, which is what may be happening to you  :)

Some of these guys make an art out of spawn camping, but to me its like vulchin, and doesn't really take much skill. The guys that impress me are the ones who move around in a TT and get kills, and survive.

Make sure you press shift-F4, this gives you gound vis range where you can see everything for 3 or 4 miles.

Shift-F1 gives you normal max vis range
Shift-F2 gives medium vis range (one I use for everything except gving)
shift-F3 gives minimum vis range on everything.

If you don't have shift-f4 pressed they can see you way before you can see them.  I use the pintle gun to scan around using zoom...you can drive from here by using rudder to stear.  All ways keep you gun pointed straight a head so when you see somebody I quick point my tank at them & then my gun is in right direction plus this puts my heaviest armour in the right direction.  Nothing worse than seeing an enemy then you can't get your gun to bear because your not sure where it is pointed.

I am a very average or below average gvier, there are guys out there very good at it. It takes practice, when you shoot have the gunsite zoomed in, I ussualy zoom it untill the circle just touches the edge of the screen, this gives me max wide angle view while still have a good zoom.  I try to all ways to use this zoom as my starting point and you will get a feel to range by tank size.

The only problem I have with gving is the damage model is very inconsistant....nothing seems to work consistantly as to hitting & killing the target. Sometimes he will blow up on first shot even tho it is a poor one and some times you can be point blank and hit him several times in different places & get nothing then he 1 pings you and you are ded.

good luck I hope this helps.

Before you jump in a tank go to set-up and make sure ground detail is set at 3 miles (maximum).  When you first spawn jump into your pintle gun and take a quick look around.  Scan for suspicious dots.  If you spot one zoom in to determine if it's an actual enemy taget or not.  If so make note of the direction your pintle gun is aimed realtive to your main gun.  Jump back to your main gun and bring it around to bear.  Zoom in and open fire.  Notice I haven't had you start your engines yet.  If the enemy is spawn camping and isn't exactly sure of their position you'll give yourself away and become kill #1 for them if start your engine.

If you've scanned around and seen nothing go start your engine.  Get moving and gear up.  Set your heading hold.  Now jump back up into your pintle (sometimes hull works as well) and ride/steer from there using your rudder, always scanning for dots.  You may have to move back into the drivers position to navigate through forests or to gear up or down as terrain requires.  If you spot an enemy turn toward him, stop, shut off your engine, gear to neutral, jump into your main gun, zoom in and open fire.  You turn toward him as your tank turns faster than your turret.  You stop and gear to neutral to stabalize your gun platform.  You shut your engine off so he doesn't hear you.

The best places to hit an opposing tank are:

1.  Just between the turret and hull to pop the turret for the kill.
2.  The turret to disable it.
3.  Directly in the front to get shrapnal into the hull.
4.  The tracks to disable him.
5.  Then engine area to disable him.

Hope this helps.

I am new, but I disagree.

I have found a couple of groups that take bases with nothing more than Gv's.  I am not a great flyer yet, but have found I am not bad with a flakpanzer.  With the right mix of gv/s, you can march across a map quite quickly.

Three or 4 panzers, a M-3 with troops, one with supplies and a couple of flackpanzers.  Add in a few fast movers for cover and recon and any town is toast.
