The bellboy walks up to the counter and the desk clerk says "you idiot the rooms are on special for $25 a night". He then hands the bellboy back $5 in $1 bills. Trying to figure out how he is going to give 3 guys back 5 $1 bills the bellboy decides he will give each guy back $1 and keep $2 for himself.

If the bellboy gave each guy back a $1 that would mean each guy is basically spending $9 for the room correct??

Soooo....if 9x3=27 and the bellboy kept $2 .....and 27+2=29

Where did the other dollar go? :D

Classic example of misdirection.

Teh men each paid $9 for the room or $27 total.
The hotel got $25 and the bellboy got US$2 so 25 + 2 = 27.
It's a trick question and the 30 is not the solution (it's the number that makes you confused).

You put the proper context on it and say each man initially paid $10 and had $1 returned to them.

Sooo.... 30 - 3 = 27 = 25 + 2.

Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

You can't give an abstract riddle, like "a broken pencil and a bullet wound" because riddles should give all the information to figure it out, you just need to use your mind. You can't assume there's a hunter nearby firing bullets, or what-have-you. Most riddles have just 1 answer, and if you can come up with 50+ hypothetical answers, it's not really a riddle :) My opinion.

Look, 30 bucks paid, but the price was really 25. So 5 bucks extra. He gives 3 bucks back (25+3=28) and keeps the other two (28+2=30). There's no missing dollar.

It is easy to calculate if you just can formulate an equation from the unnaturally long sentence.
My mind also began boiling after a few conditions in the sentence in the initial attempts, but I solved it :)
