New Alabama Head Football Coach???
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:35:12 AM »
Well after talking with a buddy of mine this morning back home (I am in Vancouver for the rest of today) he says that talk radio shows there are saying that two NFL coaches have been offered the job.

Jon Gruden was supposedly offered the job and Nick Saban has been offered the job again as well. According to what I was told Jon Gruden has asked that they wait until the end of the NFL season before being announced as the coach at Alabama. Saban has reported turned Alabama down three times now because he says he doesn't want to leave Miami.

So has anyone in the Tampa area heard anything about Gruden wanting/taking the job?

They should beg Shula to come back.  It seems to me that firing him was the goofball, panic ridden, instant gratification move of the year.

Its not going to be Coach Rich Rodriguez,
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Why would Gruden or Sabin take that job? It’s gotta be twice as hard as what they’re doing now, with all the recruiting, dealing with parents, visiting every rotary club and booster chapter in the state, getting kids to class and out of jail, … all the while being compared to Bear Bryant.

Meanwhile, Gruden and Sabin are playing golf and riding on their boat in the offseason … and making more money.

Plus, how many coaches has Bama fired over the past 10  years? They renew Shula’s contract after a 10-2 season then 6 months later fire him.

They'd have to be idiots to take that job.

Most Roll Tides fans would shudder hearing this from a Tennessee Vols fan (me).  But I agree COMPLETELY with Blkknit.   This goes to show IGNORANT the "boosters" can be.

Oh I agree. I am not an Alabama fan but they should not have hired Shula in the first place but once they had him in place they should have let him have at least one more season to get them through the probation. He may have screwed up some decisions this year but since Alabama went into probation everyone in the know down in Tuscaloosa was saying that the worst part of the sanctions against them would hit in 2006 and they went 6-6. The thing of it is also that with sanctions they could not go out and recruit/pay....just kidding.... for quality high level recruits.

Even my school UAB got rid of our coach after he put us through another season if excuses and whines. Granted I liked our old coach as a person I just don't think he was capable to continue. Then we went after Jimbo Fisher and even had an agreement in place with him until the University of Alabama system Board of Trustees told our school that $600k was too much to pay him and then we went with option #2 Neal Callaway who was about $300k cheaper. The difference there is that the BOT for this system of universities is highly unbalanced and doesn't pay attention to the other two universities that bring in lots of money outside of athletics.

There're plenty of capable coordinators at the professional and college level, including some who have been head coaches. The problem is that Alabama is trying too hard to make a 'big-name' hire, all because they want to save some face.

Pete Carroll was a failed head coach in the NFL.

Charlie Weis was an NFL coordinator.

Bob Stoops was a college coordinator.

Jim Tressel was the coach of D-1AA Youngstown State.

None of these were big names when they were hired, but they are now.

You guys should really listen in on the local sports talk radio station at some of the crap with this Alabama job. I love listening to how they have rehashed the botched hiring of Rich Rodriguez and other things. Its to the point now where I will listen to our crappy local country stations to stay away from sports talk radio.

In case you want to listen in via the net check it out at http://www.wjox690.com

I nearly puked when they said Coach Rod had accepted. It was all rumours and he debunked them the next day in a press conference. I know people do stupid things for money, but why on earth would you leave West Virginia when your best shot at the title will be next year.  Pat White and Steve Slaton are only juniors, why would you leave them for Alabama?

I'm glad mal moore just hunkered down and did his best to make the right hire.

There's a lot more to the bama situation than people outside of the state know. Like jim rome. That guy is a clueless dolt, as well as most of espn who have been bashing the program for the past month. Now they'll bash saban for taking the job.

"the shadow of the bear" what a joke, I think chris fowler coined that one.

myelo, why was mike shula fired?

I am the furthest thing from a Bama fan but they have only fired two coaches in the last 10 years.
