New Jug Skin (D11)
« on: December 15, 2006, 12:36:54 AM »
I'm working on "Sylvia" right now.

I've got another D11 skin planned, but I'll wait until this one is more complete before I begin work on that.

Not too much progress. It's been a little while since I did my last skins (with BMF), so I'm re-applying what I learned with them. It's rough, but I'm just trying to get some ground work done for the details and markings.

Thank God for the OD anti glare panel that helps with that funky top cowling mapping...

Question, if they let us do D-23 skins on a D-11, why not let us use P-47M skins on a D-40?  I'm hoping, but doubtful that we'll ever see either the D-23 or M model of the jug...

No Ms.

D23 is there on the 11 because both have the razorback.

Don't forget, aileron trim tab on left aileron only on the Jugs...I don't know what you've got, but you shouldn't be able to see any panel lines inside the back half of the intercooler doors on the sides of the aft fuselage.  There are small access panels on the rear half of the door, but with the front half modelled in the position its in (all the way open), the rear half should be in its recessed position and would be fairly shaded out.  Small detail that may be more personal preference than anything.

Are you sure about the trim tabs? I've seen an image of the restored D-40-ish "Hun Hunter" and it looks like it's got a trim tab on the starboard wing as well.

Also: thanks for the reminder about the vents!

I can't find any pictures online that show it well enough, but...

There was a fixed trim tab on the right aileron, but the only adjustable trim tab was on the left aileron only.  I found a couple of references for you, just no pictures.

Take a look at this link...

Well, even if they were fixed on the ground, they were still separate from the main aileron (posable) so I'd leave the panel line there, anyways. The trim tabs on 109s and 190s are fixed on the ground and I used panel lines to denote them, as well.

Yeah, understand on the 109, but the fixed trim tab on the right aileron was a small 1"X6" or so tab fixed to the trailing edge of the aileron and not actually part of the 3D model we have of the P-47.  It wasn't inset in the aileron and would not have a panel line representing it as you have on the right aileron.  It would actually be something added to the aft edge of the aileron, but we don't have anything there in AH.

Hrm... It's the same way on 109/190 ailerons, but I "faked" it by making them recessed, just because it looked bare without them.

Hrm... That webpage you linked didn't really help too much. It just said adjustable on the left aileron. I think I'd need a pic to see the proper placement of the starboard trim tab. Anybody got one?

Also, was this true of all 47s or just these early models?

I've got pictures in books that show it.  Maybe I'll thumb through and find a picture reference in the hope that you have the same book :)

But, it was for all B, C, D, G, and N series P-47's.  What we really need is a close up, near-planform picture of the Jug that has enough detail to show it.  Anybody got one--Dan maybe?

You're right. I went flipping through the few books I have. I found an artist's rendition of 3-way plans for a D-5 model, and it had no indication of a trim tab on the right wing. I wasn't entirely sure so I pulled out another book. It had a photo of a P47D with oil all over it after a forced landing, the right wing toward the camera. The angle was dead-on for the aileron, and I couldn't tell. Then I pulled out a different book and saw the famous photo of the P47 shot to chit, landed tail-up with one wing shot to ribbons. The other wing's aileron is visible, and no trim tab lines (as on the opposite wing) just the extended tab.

Wish I'd known about this when doing my other 3 P47 skins. It's too minor a point to go back and resubmit them, but I'll keep it in mind for all future skins.
