Switched to TCP
« on: December 13, 2006, 08:41:20 PM »
First, is switching to TCP a problem?  My FRs are not affected and I'm not crashing to desk top, so I don't know.  Second, I never had this problem before...sais not receiving updates, switched to TCP.  It has only happened since I upgraded my McAfee software.  I turn off the virus scanner, then turned off the firewall (is that a good idea?), then tried to turn off all the McAfee stuff.  What's going on?

If switching to tcp is not a bad thing, I don't care.  But the only change I've made is the McAfee.  That's why I think its doing it, but when I turn it off, I still get the problem.  Any suggestions???

Well, I've tried everything except deleting the McAfee product.  FBdhaus had the best suggestion...play and see if its a problem.  Among the things I've done are disable all McAfee stuff, give specific permission for ports 2000-6000 (udp and tcp) on the firewall, give Aces High full permission on the firewall, always disable virus scan, disabled programs per Skuzzy's sticky, enabled icmp pinging, and more stuff I forget.  If TCP causes unplayable lags or ctds, the McAfee stuff is outta here.

Later.

I have seen problems with both McAfee and Norton in this area.  The biggest issue I have with either is it appears you can no longer simply disable them on the fly, even though they offer that option.

That's obviously the problem.  As I said, my older McAfee version let me simply disable the virus scan, grant full permission through the firewall and no problem.  That clearly isn't working here.

We'll see how it goes.

Well now....   Uninstalled the entire security center, then reinstalled only the virus scanner and firewall.  Gave Aces High full access through the firewall, turned off the virus scan and got into the game.  Didn't do any of the other "fixes" I've read about like trusting the IP, identifying the ports.    No problems.  The one piece of the security center I did not reinstall was the "privacy protection".  Even though it was disabled, it still blocked the udp outgoing updates.  LOL....only three days of stupidity kept me from solving it sooner.
