I just had to do a whole new reformat due to a really stupid error on my part. In the process I went from Win95B to Win98. No biggy but one thing that kept happening to me when I was all done was my PC would freeze up,, lock up, intermitantly. I'd see the the hard drive/cpu light lit up but I could do nothing for the 3 to 5 seconds duration this occured.
This would happen constantly when I was online. Then I saw my 'activity' light lit flickering on the cable modem. So I suspected stupid activity from haxor idjits playing around with scripts and such. So I went to
http://grc.com and ran the test to check for open ports on my PC. Yup! I found my port 139 (Netbios) was open - where as back underWin95B it was closed and I was considered locked or stealthy. No more. Now I had port 139 open. It took me all day to find a fix searching the web. I didn;t want a firewall if I could help it. And after all it was closed when I had Win95B installed and I didn't have a firewall. Luckily I found one admin that posted on a forumn that said the simplest way to shut that port down (no need for a firewall) was to find the file vnbt.386 and simply rename it vnbt.sav
I did that tonight, rebooted, went back to
http://grc.com and retest for open ports and found I was closed up tight as a drum again.
My brief, intermitant lockups have also disappeared!!
