"I believe both officers could have been more professional towards each other; then the situation would not have escalated," Dwyer said. "But it did and it's unfortunate."

I think this statement pretty much summed it up and it has nothing to do with tasers.

I'll bet he never thought he'd be on the receiving end one day.  Really, I'd like to respect the police force.  I really would, because crooks are a lot worse.  But I've seen too much abuse of power - both first and second hand.  Maybe this guy deserved it and maybe he didn't.  We'll never know.

It doesn't sound like an abuse of power it sounds like to powers coliding.

IE one was doing his job to the "T" and the other couldnt figure out why the other was doing there job to the "T" and got mad and acted out.

Again it sounds like it has nothing to do with tasers but two opposing cops in a face off of who thinks who is more right.

Havent clicked the link.
Dont need to.

The more I learn about these things the less I think they should be in anyones hands

Including Law Enforcement and Especially not mere Security guards who tend to be wannabe cops who couldnt cut it for whatever reason to actually become a real cop.

these things are far far more dangerous then any Tazer International sponcered study would have you beleive
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

The barrier to use a taser is too low. It might not be a lethal weapon in waste majority of cases, but neither is a batton. However, more consideration is used with the use of a batton and officers are much more likely to get in trouble for using a batton needlessly.

We have a few videos where a suspect is outright electrocuted to the point they can no longer function, even though it wouldn't been necessary to take it as far, and the officers, if unlucky, are at most reprimanded. Had a batton been used to the same effect the officers would be facing a judge.

Tasing, as an action, shouldn't be taken lightly just because it's considered as non-lethal.

I can't see why they tased him for the first time, but I do understand if they want to tase someone reaching out for a gun, even if just to secure it. I suppose the guy attempted to secure his gun as a result of training. However it wouldn't have led to that had they not tased him for the first time.

If he had been doing his job to a "T" his Chief would not have made the comment that you based your first response on, the first thing he is going to do is protect his officer.

My point is that these things are used far too often and it has all to do with tasers.

I rather doubt that this would thing would have degenerated into a gunfight had the taser not been employed in this instance.

Non lethal force is a good thing provided it is used in place of lethal force where applicable, it is not good when it becomes "I don't like this guys attitude, I think a zap is in order".
