Roger Wilco Suddenly conflicting with AH
« on: November 28, 2001, 06:16:00 AM »
OK - for a few months now I have had occasional lockups which I put down to video drivers but it turns out was RW. I have used RW for ages with no problems up til now. The fault is now hard on and I can't fix it.

This is what happens:-
1.Start AH using task bar icon.
2.AH starts at intro screen - select Online or Offline as required (same thing happens for both)
3.If going online I put in my password and on next screen select the arena.
4.Ah starts to load the terrain but the AH window minimizes to the task bar - RW is also now in the task bar.
5.Click on AH block to restore and PC crashes with the desktop background showing and shortcut arrows and nothing else.
Have to CTRL ALT DEL twice to reboot.

If I try to shut down RW before restoring AH then when I do restore it AH crashes to desktop.

If however I remove RW completely from my PC (ADD / Remove Programs) everything is fine - AH runs ok and it doesn't minimize.

Even with auto start RW and enable RW unchecked RW still loads if it is on the PC.

I have removed and re-installed AH and RW and re-installed DX8.1 but no improvement.

Oh and I've tried both Mk1c and Mk1d of RW - both the same.

ANY IDEAS ANYONE ????

A very quiet Sparks   :(

I;ve always had problems with AH-induced RW.

I always use it separately from the game.

When I use RW I can get into the game ok. Its when I'm in that RW starts causing lotsa warps and freezes. I usually get booted completely out of the game within 1`0 mins. I can use it, but it is not worth it.

I removed RW quite a while ago.  It doesn't play well with DX8 and can cause a few problems.

If you are using RW, make SURE you have it set to WAV recording.  Also, start RW manually before you start AH... it seems to work better that way as Rip mentions.

Well thanks for the replies all - seems like me and RW must go our separate ways - a pity because it has behaved itself up till now but thats PC's for you

Part of Microsoft's war against RW (aside from buying their closest competitor and giving the competitor's product away from free) was multiple DirectX releases designed to make RW crash.  Similar to their campaign against Netscape.

The company that owns RW has laid off all the programming brains related to RW, so it's unlikely we'll see a fix.  I suggest trying the AH Voice Beta or Battlecom.  I've heard some good things about Teamsound too.

Heres a tip when removing RW
When you do normall unistall it leave things in the registry.
What to do.

Uninstall RW.
Then go to Start, Run, and type in "regedit" (without quotes), and then hit ok.

From there, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Then to Software
and find the folder that says Resounding and delete that folder.

This way when u remove it you will get a nice clean start if u want to put it back on.
