The F-15.

F-15 is the best fighter that has ever existed, and it has never been shot down.

Out of the two the original poster asked, I'd say the F-16 right out of the gate, but then I'd qualify that with "The P-51, eventually".  The original F-16 was a winner, and the P-51 eventually reached that status after a few revisions.

Otherwise, the F-15 has the most impressive ratio.

Maybe the original poster should have limited his question to a choice of *only* the P-51 and the F-16.

He should have asked " which is the better fighter of it's time, the F-16 or the P-51?"

Instead, the original poster asked a loaded question, and I answered.

On a historical effect view, if it were not for the P-51, we may not have won WW2 to the scale we did....and not developed an F-16, etc

But for the effectiveness, diverse mission roles...and just my silly bias on which i like better.....I side with the Viper
