Its just his familiarity with that airport.

You'll never be familiar with every airport you might encounter, but you can do your best by studying your diagram ahead of time and getting a good idea what the control is likely to have you do after you land.

Failing that, progressive taxi.  Some towers hate progressive taxi... Santa Barbara jumps to mind (I hate that facility, less traffic than Van Nuys, but the they act like they are Heathrow and don't have time for anything you need).

Anyhow, because of some experiences like that I go to a lot of trouble to avoid asking for progressive...  Its all on the charts and makes everyone happy when you study up before you go.  Takes load off the controllers to, which is always a good thing.

Here's another completely nerdy thing you can do.  Do whatever you're doing in Microsoft Flight Sim.  Whether there's an obstacle or noise abatement departure, taxiing or just to familiarize yourself with towers (the cell phone towers are pretty darn close in FS9 to real life...save any new ones built in the last couple years) in the local area.

Works great and its free once you have the software.  I'd suggest NOT getting FSX because...it's FSX.

88,

If you go to most medium or larger airports in the GA side they will have a little store in the pilots lounge area or the area where the desk is located. Some of them are pretty fair sized and have all sorts of aviation related gizmos besides the latest sectional or fuel tester. Some of Machado's books are there too.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
