Here's a snippet from a discussion board, the topic was like 'installed Vista, uninstalled it and now my computer still tries to boot into Vista permanently'.

Vista for one is already final! I have it on three machines. Two Vista uses a new Boot Manager. The Boot INI is no longer used. One thing you can try is to do is to fix the MBR and fixboot in the recovery console. If you had left Vista on you could have changed the default OS back to XP but you took it off and off the top of my head I do not recall which file needs to be edited to correct it.

So if you install Vista it will pork your boot records, which will 100% sure lead into completely destroyed windows installations in the near future.

No need to panic. Just keep googling for it.

I have quite a few lab machines where we had XP on it, the put on vista, and then were left with the boot mess.

It is indeed fixable. I don't have my notes here, but using BartsPE disk made it a trivially simple fix.

after an xp reinstall a fdisk /mbr won't fix it?

Sure it can be fixed - but it doesnt change the fact it gets porked. Lots of non-tech-savvy users will be confused.

Non-tech savvy users don't typically don't upgrade their operating systems. They certainly don't try to roll back afterwards. Or download patches. Or update virus-guard definitions. Or know not to click on the 'stop spamming me' link...
