Joystick advice
« on: December 30, 2006, 08:08:51 PM »
Ok, first off, keep that dirty response to yourself.

I am going to get back into flying AH but I no longer have a joystick.  I can't stand Saitek's, I refuse to by anything Logitech, and Microsoft doesn't make my favorite joystick anymore.  I saw a Thrustmaster at CompUSA that I really liked but they were sold out.  Microsoft Sidewinders in good condition can be had on ebay but I'd prefer getting something new (unless one of you have a Sidewinder new in a box, name me a price I may just buy it from you).

Having said that, what other joystick options are out there?

(Yes, I know this could have been posted in H&S forum but the O'Club gets so much more traffic).

Thanks in advance.

I know you tossed out the Saitek concept, but after 9 years of 3 different sidewinders, I went for the X-52.

No Regrets and quite frankly, wish I had it since my early days of AW, it's a great stick.  I spent quite a long time testing out the sticks before I settled on this one.

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

It's the feel of the Saitek that bugs me.  It feels very flimsy and not well built.  The Sidewinders to me felt more solid and were bigger for my hand.  I'd gladly go through 1 Sidewinder every 3 years again.  Thanks for your input though.  Saitek may be my only option.

Yeah I am not really thrilled about crossing the $100 mark for a stick but, hey, ya get what ya pay for, right?  And the CH's look solidly built.  Thanks!

Think of it as a "stick for life."  There is little you can do to it to break it short of throwing it out the window (which is very possible playing AHII).

You really need the whole set for total immersion...

Diablo, do you use gameport or USB gear? I have a spare kit of CH gear (Pro Throttle Pro Pedals Flightstick) I'll never use again (I went XP and got a new USB set of the same). I got 7 years' use out of 'em, they're barely broken in :)

They're yours if you can use 'em, you can cover the freight. Its a cheap way to check out CH stuff, its really heavy duty. Thing is, USB works *much* better with XP. Once I finally and reluctantly gave up on 98SE, spending $300 on a USB set was a must. YMMV, however.

AKAK could probably weigh in with some wisdom here.

If I were you I'd get a Sidewinder Precision Pro (1) if you want ultra high precision and no drifting.  The mechanisms inside sidewinders are one of a kind and still not found on most current joysticks today.

Hey thanks for the offer Culero, but am total USB as of '01.

And now IK3 has me back wanting my Sidewinder again.  :cry

Then suck it up and go CH USB. I agree those MS sticks are great, but the CH gear is even better. Its bulletproof. The only downside is price and larger desk footprint, but in the long run you'll be happy you bit the bullet.

CH is professional grade stuff with a professional grade price tag. After my MS PP-2 FF died I broke down and bought a Saitek X-52. It took some getting used to switching from force feedback back to a spring stick, but I've become used to it. If the X-52 was FF, it would be greatness.
