Video card memory
« on: March 28, 2001, 01:04:00 AM »
I have an 8 meg V2, which I would have thought would be insufficient in memory for today's games, yet the system text on AH start up says I'm only using half of it.

Why's this? Is it incorrect? Is there anything I can do about it?

The V2 properties sheet has a box for limiting texture memory for glide apps, but that's unchecked.

You mean the green display at the top of the screen in Aces High?  That is available and used TEXTURE memory.  With 8 megs of video memory on your card, some of it must be used for frame buffers and that sort of thing.  That only leaves 4 megs for texture storage, and that is what AH is showing.  It is correct, and everything is working properly.

Is AH playable on that card?  You will have to use 16 bit color, but other than that with the right CPU I expect 1024x768 to be just playable... is it?

Thanks Lephturn, that makes sense.

Yep, an 8 meg voodoo2 runs AH fine, around 30 FPS, although I get a big drop near smoke or clouds.

I tried overclocking the card, but ran into instability, so now I leve it alone :-)

Max res and colour depth for a V2 is 800 X 600, 16 bit.

LEPHTURN
my dad uses a CEL 333 and a 8 meg voodoo2
to play aces hi. He gets very good performance from this machine. He gets low fps near smoke and clouds but up hi he sees fps around 35-40 at times. Matter fast i think the machine he has is the smoothest running machine i've ever seen.

Yes, those V2's are a great little card.  They can't do tha high color depth and such, or the filtering that the new ones can, but they certainly have had a good lifespan!

I went from Voodoo to Voodoo 3, and now I'm running the V5 5500.  All good cards.
