The new version of Windows; is it worth waiting for?

alot of the prepackaged vista OS with pc's will be the home verson or media verson ... this is  cut down and doesnt have the full bells and whistles that the full os has .. also please note that when it gets released it will have MS's own virous software as the only AV that can be ran on it .. now think about how long it takes MS to patch and fix stuff .. (I see a huge opening for lots of virus's to cause chaos here)

As of right now ... RC2 is a downgrade for us gamers .
I'f they lock it down as tight as they say they are ..everything you install will have to have the MS seal of approvial in it to . (i see lots of monopoly lawsuits comming over this )

I'm running Vista RC1 on a five year old machine -1.5ghz P4, 512mb. It looks pretty, has some sorta neat things but otherwise is a big yawn from a user's perspective. It's a resource hog. I've forgotten what MS says the minimum hardware config is but I would say the above specs on the machine I'm running it on are near the minimum judging by its performance. It's got built in speech recognition. I spent about two hours "training" that and to say the results sucked would be an understatement. I had some speech recognition software from MS maybe 15 years ago that was just about as much good. There will be four editions, I believe, with Vista Ultimate being the high end. The last I heard Ultimate would go for $400+. Being that I'm in IT I'll be pretty much forced to buy it so I can learn it. But I'll be running it on something other that my main pc for awhile or installing for dual boot with XP. Otherwise I wouldn't be rushing out to get it.

Hehe, yes please do not ask us guys who have to support this mess.

eskimo2, do yourself a favor.  Let the bleeding edge guys wrangle with this for a bit.  Initially, the OS is going to cause a significant performance dip in all games.  You really do not want that.

I can see the "Texh support" forum now,...."I just installed Vista, and my frame rate sucks!  Fix it!".

Me:  Re-install XP and it will solve your problems. (I really wish I could say that). :)

Oh. here is the current pricing in U.S. dollars, for full versions/upgrades
Vista Ultimate: $399.00 / $259.00 (combines Business and Premium)
Vista Business: $299.00 / $199.00 (no Media Center, more management tools, very similar to XP Professional)
Vista Home Premium: $239.00 / $159.00 (Aero support plus Media Center)
Vista Home Basic: $199.00 / $99.00 (no Aero support)

The price is structured differently outside the U.S.

That's right, you will be able to get it from China/Korea for $10 without the DRM restrictions. :aok

I just read today that Vista Business is on track for release in November and the home versions are due in January.

The European versions will differ from the rest of the world in two areas. The EU version will allow users to turn off sertain security stuff to allow for competing software and there will be changes to the PatchGuard system whatever that is.

Hey Lunkhead,

I wudda thought the wittle woman wodda dumped yer beaten corpse in the woods by now.  How ya been.

Jarbo and I are gitt'n ready to start flying again. Watch for us online and we'll hook up.

Wabb

P.S. stay away from vista for now. Too pricey, High hardware requirements, and waaaaay too buggy at present. I couldn't even run AH2 on a fresh install of vista ultimate, probably cause of the driver problems.

You’ve been a member on this board for eight years and this is your fourth post?  Man, we thought you died about five years ago?  You’ve been away a looooong time.  You know AHII is all Korean War era now; they ended all the WWII stuff a few years ago.  I quit because I couldn’t handle the jets; I hope you like them.

My wife is too smart to kill me and dump me; she’s enjoying torturing me for our second decade now.  She beats me half to death but always knows exactly when to stop.  She still turns me on and feeds me so I put up with it.

I’ll avoid Vista.
