ms ffb2 j/s buttons not working
« on: March 29, 2001, 04:43:00 PM »
Prior to the 1.06 patch 02, I had a microsoft force feeback 2 stick all set
up. I decided to unhook it and try my older logitech interceptor stick. Then
today came patch 02 for 1.06.

I decided to re-hook up the msff2 stick, and apparently buttons 7 and 8 are
not being recognized by the AH joystick mapping routine.

I had already uninstalled the logitech software, and even deleted and
re-installed the ms ff2 software, to no avail. Buttons 7 and 8 are still not
being reconized in AH, but i have no problems with the windows calibration,
or them being reconized with other games I have.

and fwiw, the jsmap.cfg file shows value of 0,-1,but 7  and 0,-1, but 8. i see buttons 1-6 having values of 12-17 for the middle paramter.

whether this is causing the plm, or is an effect of the plm, i don't know.

and in the in-game setup, joystick control, select joystick, buttons 7 and 8 do have no associated entry on the "input" side.
buttons 1 -6 on the "ah control" side correspond to buttons 0-5 on the "input" side.

lol, can you tell i'm trying everything i can think of?

Yep, I think Skurj is onto something.  In your Aces High\Settings folder, rename or move jsmap.cfg.  Then set your stick up again, that might do it.

I'll muck about with this a bit more tonight if you don't get anywhere and see if I can help sort it out.

I nuked the jsmap 2x, even went so far as to install AH on my F: drive starting at AH1056 and walking up through the subsequent upgrades (fwiw, the 2nd AH install showed these: 0,18,But 7  0,19,But 8),
however, these two buttons didn't function then either under the j/s selection routine. lol, i know i wasn't dreaming that they were working as of 2 days ago.

i even reinstalled dx8.  these buttons definitely work in other games.

(looking at the jscfg after the nuke, the input values for middle are -1 for both again under ah1062).

but still input in the stick mapping shows no response to these buttons when i push them.

as i mentioned, it may have something to do with the setup routine (select j/s), where these two buttons have no corresponding ah control - ah input. (perhaps something is missing from the "supported stick" database?

the thing i'm trying to remember is whether the j/s selction prior had said "micrsoft force feedback 2" as opposed to it saying "microsoft force feedback" now.  perhaps the ms ffb only has 6 buttons, while the msffb2 has 8 and this somehow is a contributing factor?

i even went so far as to open the .kmp files and try to edit them around, but couldn't save as .kmp (so these are "after the fact" files created from the setup routines, right?)

I have a strong feeling it's something with the stick recognization routine in setup...

hep me hep me!! i've fallen and can't look up!

:o)

thanks again, and hope we can manage to sort this out, cuz i could use those 2 extra buttons.

til then it's "wait til i get my 2 buttons back!!! you'll be in trouble then!!"

:oP

In the AH stick setup, you say those to buttons are not mapped to anything?  Map them to But7 and But8.  That should do it.

tried that with the stick mapping and even the ms profiling software, still no joy. the setup simply does not want to recognize input on these buttons, leading me to think it has something to do with the stick recognition routine.  ??

the stick is specifically ms sidewinder ff2. dunno if that makes a diff.

i'm still stumped, tho' as i mentioned the buttons work in ever other game.

on thing however, when i d/l the 1.06 patch 2 it hung up on the install (at the end) and i had to c-a-d to do the shutdown, once it re-booted it finished the install and everything was fine, except for the lack of input on buttons 7, 8.

sigh i've been trying to avoid having to do a complete re-install of AH, but i guess i may as well give that a try.

i'll post results.

What I had to do to get those buttons working was set them in the SW profile to something odd you don't use in AH and map the buttons in AH to those settings. FF2 sucks big time
