Sad Day For NASCAR Fans
« on: January 07, 2007, 11:12:37 PM »
Bobby Hamilton died today after a battle with cancer. Bobby was one of the last "old school" drivers of NASCAR's roots. He overcame much adversity in his life starting out literally dirt poor living in a friend's garage and working as a wrecker driver and Repo Man.

Also, Benny Parsons is still in ICU since Dec. 26th. Benny had a lung removed last year after being diagnosed with cancer. Benny was the first  driver to qualify a stock car over 200 mph and still holds the record for the fastest 500 mile race in NASCAR history, a record that will likely never be broken.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you B.P.

Saw note of Bobby's death on the local station's website this afternoon, and passed it on to jayski. I remember Bobby Sr. when he drove for the local country FM station, and for a local fan and lighting store. I hated to hear this, but he looked pretty bad the last time I saw him around town. He was tough, and he hid it well, and fought hard. He's earned his rest.

I haven't seen anything about BP having a lung removed, but they pretty well wasted his left lung with chemo and radiation, it barely functions.

I can barely remember him. Seen a few videos of him racing the cubes they called cars back then. My Great-uncle Richard Petty's still kickin', though.

A Rook who first flew 09/26/03 at the age of 13, has been a GL in 10+ Scenarios, and was two-time Points and First Annual 68KO Cup winner of the AH Extreme Air Racing League.

My apologies, you are correct. His lung was severely damaged, not removed.

No need to apologize, was wondering if you'd read something I missed. Have to wonder if it isn't causing the problems, and if he might be better if they did remove it.

I have a cousin in the hospital who can't have visitors. That's a bad sign. They're moving the cousin to a hospice.

I heard it listening to SpeedFreaks on the way home from work. It's possible I heard it wrong or something. I remembered reading the original story about BP after I did a quick Google search and it said he still had some use.

From the way they described his current condition, things did not sound good. BP is not allowed any visitors at this time. As you said, not a good sign at all.

Get Well messages can be sent to Benny and his family at bp@goprn.com

Didnt even know BP was in ICU. I thought he had the better of it for some reason after seeing him after it was diagnosed.

Sorry about your cousin CVH. Lots of bad news around here as of late.:(
