those are two colliding galaxies correct?

Yes, that is M51 The Whirlpool Galaxy and NGC 5195.  They are 37 Million Light Years away.  I am sure that if we could see what they look like today, the image would be very different.  I think they passed very close to each other rather than a direct collision, but eventually I would think they will merge.
