Free Photoshop-type programs?
« on: January 28, 2007, 10:44:01 AM »
My comp went down, and I've lost my serial number for my photoshop 7. :cry

Does anyone use any good shareware or very low cost image editors with the same capabilities? I'm not paying for a new one when I have perfectly good disk that I can't install sitting right here.

PiantdotNet 3.0 ( is free, click link below )  must have MS 2.0 .net framework installed

is like having MS Piant,  Jasc(now Corel ) Paintshop pro, and adobe Photoshop all rolled up into one proggy........

Now why in the world would a paint program require the .NET framework?  I would avoid it just for that.  Nothing good can come of using/installing/activating the .NET framework.

beats me, outside the fact it is  an ongoing opensource build off of the MS Paint orgin.  might be a requirement from MS themselves since they are allowing it to be opensource, who knows.......

I do not use this on my personal comp, but do use it on my laptop work comp, since the company's computer whiz insisted he must load up the .net framework when I 1st got it...  then he loaded the 2.0 version.....

I always been skeptical since reading your posting regarding  .net use.......

I'm not really impressed with Gimp...

Photoshop is a lot easier to use and finished product from gimp looks like crap with a lot more effort to get there at all.

Looks like I'm makin a trip over to e-bay again. :cry

As a marketing director, I always had to deal with very tight deadlines.  I really like Photoshop, but I could always get the same quality in a shorter time-frame with Paint Shop Pro.

Paint Shop Pro X has a free (60 days if I remember right) trial, and is far less expensive than Photoshop.

What most folks will post really comes down to personal preference...kinda like asking everyone what their favor of ice cream is...so try out as many as you can before you decide.

I'm a dedicated "farker" that is to say I like to get in on those fark.com "photoshop" daily contests.  The work those folks do is HILARIOUS.

The PhotoShop cost here ~770€ and the GIMP is a free open source project.

To my hobby 2D need the GIMP is just fine. The pros surely have higher demands.

BTW There is so called GIMPshop version, which have PS kind of GUI. I never tried it.

if it really is a legal and legit copy, why not try contacting adobe about getting your license back?

that would be free, and at least worth the try.
