much confusion about "the whole nine yards"

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_252.html

but generally meaning "going all the way"

"double take"

when you look at something, look away, and think "WHOA" and look again, meaning, 2 takes (or looks) on the same subject matter as it is close to unbelievable

The whole nine yards = all there is, everything available. Rumor is it was started by pilots during WWII. Supposedly the ammunition belts were 9 yards long.

Double take = a quick second look at something to be sure you saw it correctly the first time.

The whole nine yards refers to everything that is relevant.  Bob took everything he could think of on his overnight camping trip...tent, sleeping bag, compass, gps, ice chest, hand axe, emergency signal flares, the whole nine yards.

Double take is a delayed reaction to a stimulus where someone looks at something that normally would be immediately noticed, but continues on a bit before looking again at whatever is was that should have been immediately noticed.  Origins in comedy/theater.  Or like Mustaine and RPM said are good examples.
