Engine Fires

The graphic looks like fire streaming from an engine.  Damage List usually shows Fuel Tank damage.  Inevitably the plane blows up.  So my question is, anyway to put them out?

Nope, not at present. Nice addition, a fire bottle for fires :)

I have noticed a few times when I've ditched and on fire the fire seemed to go out.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Were there such devices in WWII era bombers to put out fires?

Most of the bombers did have extinguishers for the engines if they caught fire.  A fire needs three (3) elements; a fuel source, an ignition source, and oxygen.  Take any one (1) of the three (3) elements away and you can extinguish the fire.  (No, I'm not a firefighter!)

In an engine fire, well I'm not sure about the modeling in this game.  I guess you could try a few things though.  Try selecting that engine and turn it off.  Another trick would be if you have the altitude, try diving down.  The speed, in theory, could take away the O2 and that would also extinguish the fire.  Just leave yourself some altitude to pull out of your dive.

There are better bomber pilots than me.  Maybe somebody has already tried a few tricks and could help you out better than me.  Good luck!:aok

"Try selecting that engine and turn it off."

Sadly, it doesn't work. An engine fire is a death sentence in any aircraft in the game. It would be nice if this could be changed for the bombers at least - most other aircraft systems failures can be worked around, except for pilot wounds and severe structural damage. It seems unfair to put the player in an insoluble lethal position. I assume, based on previous posts from Mr HiTech about engine oil damage, that the game makes the aircraft explode after a random length of time has passed rather than anything more complex.

From a programming point of view the creators would either have to add a new set of keys to control the fire extinguishers, or alternatively make it so that if the user shuts down a flaming engine, a puff of white smoke appears, a hissing noise plays, the fire goes out, and the engine becomes permanently broken.

Perhaps the game could be altered so that you could use the cursor keys to move your pilot onto the wing. You would then press the secondary fire button in order to throw a blanket over the flames. And you would have to get back into the cockpit. It would be a nightmare at 20,000 feet.

Your advice will however work in the Me-163. Selecting the engine and turning it off will stop the fire, and also conserve precious fuel, and you can turn it back on again.

Hell make the fires like IL2. The fire extinguishers and if you get enough dive speed the possibility of putting it out, if you want to see if you live that long :P. Sometimes the fires also go on and off, but do no damage in il2
