Crazy Flight Sim stories.
« on: January 16, 2007, 01:08:11 PM »
Thought I start a post on the craziest things that have happend to you in a flight sim.

Heres mine
I was playing Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1, and I was in some downloaded aircraft playing online. I was chasing this guy for a while and could never hit him. I keep shooting and shooting like a noob, and my bullets would go to high, or to low, then I was just waiting there for the right shot. Next thing I know, my cat jumps up on my lap, my eyes look at her, my hands are on the joystick and num pad keys. STUPID CAT GET OFF THE KEYBOARD, and then she steps on the spacebar (Fire button) and shoots the guy down I've been chasing for like 10min. A quick step on the spacebar and a quick burst sent him falling down to earth. I pick up cat and gave her a big hug.

I was chasing someone in a JU-87G (can't remember if it was on Warbirds or here) for a few minutes.  I had botched a diving attack on him and lost my opportunity to hit him with the big ack cannon the G has, but he was 4k, then 5k out and kept walking away from me while I futilely chased him.  It got to a point where I just saw his dot and there was no distance measurement (he was that far away).  Out of frustration, I loosed an arcing ballistic shot.  For a couple seconds, that shot sailed up above his dot, then down towards it...  then BOOM.  Somehow, I managed to actually hit him.  One shot, one kill with this gun.

It was absolutely fantastic, and I'm sure he thought I was cheating, but it was just a one in a million shot.

Also, I remember being in a firefight in a German fighter, here I think.  I took two heavy rounds, one that took off my right wingtip, and one that took off my left wingtip.  The nose dropped, stall horn hooted, but as I picked up speed in my dive towards the ground (most of both wings missing), I managed to get control again.  I had coordinated flight again, even though it was performing very differently.  As it happened, I was about 10k feet up and close to my base (furball) so I pointed the plane at the base and started hoping.  To stay flying, I had to have the nose down pretty far, very space shuttle like.  I set up with a runway, killed the engine, and extended the gear.  I flared like crazy as I crossed the numbers at something like 200mph.  I pancaked down on the pavement, breaking off both gear at once, and slid much of the length of the runway before coming to a stop.  .ef and 'You have landed'.  Sweeeeet.

Must've been warbirds, cause .303 shots (mere equivalent of the JU-87) are absorbed at around 1.0 - 1.3 K in Aces High.

In one of these.

The result was this:

Takeoff in "virtual" Aspen Colorado (ASE) from Rwy15.  Gear up staying under 10 feet to the end of the runway into a quick climbing right turn to follow the terrain.  The plane...a "Virtual" Cessna 560 Encore

A lumbering chandelle back down into the valley heading to the north to roll the airplane.  Rolled like a dream and kept the roll in another 180º to split S back to the southeast.

Plenty of speed into the upline for an attempted Hammerhead.  Airplane in the vertical and the rudder was not effective, differential power didn't work and the airplane sloshed back nose down so I kept in a spiraling descent while a myriad of ideas came from my sim partner and the sim instructor.

Now it's time to attempt a spin.  Climbing turn started heading SW and when the time is right full pro-spin inputs entered.  Very sloshy response and the airplane simply did not spin.  Didn't snap into a spin didn't even think of it.  Rudder effectiveness minimal.

High speed low pass over Rwy33 and I commenced an overhead break.  Because of the nature of the sim you can't keep a visual on the runway and when I came back around I was heading perpendicular to the runway.  This airplane really is a trip!  Turned right on the non-mountain side of the airport to set up for a turn back into the downwind to land on 15.  (the SE runway)

Just as I commenced the turn the sim partner said "try this" and moved both power levers to the cutoff position...killing the engines.

From there it was a deadstick no-flap landing on 15.  The emergency brake system is pneumatic and if you put too much pressure on the valve handle "lollypop" you can/will lock the tires causing them to pop.  I yanked on this and the sim made a "kerthunk" as it simulated our tires popping.  We stopped about 1/2way down the runway right on the centerline :)

Upon the replay in the debriefing room you can hear the laughter and giggling which made us laugh even harder than when the whole thing was going down in the first place.

Denholm, you may have missed that I was flying a JU-87G, and hit him with a shot from the 37mm Flak 18, firing a standard-caliber 2 pound round (37 mm) from an L/89 barrel.
