P-47N Main Fuel

Now here's a thing.

I was just flying a sortie in a P47-N, which I like to fly because it feels good. It is a man's aeroplane, for real men - and manly women. Puffy ground ack knocked out my main fuel tank, and I started streaming fuel. Almost immediately it felt as if the aircraft was flying differently. It was as if the auto-trim was pushing my nose upwards all the time. I completely blew an easy kill and almost messed up my landing.

Perhaps I was imagining it, or still in shock from the ack. In theory I could have hit the right hand side of my keyboard until the trim counters started moving, but I didn't have time to diagnose the problem. Does ack damage to the main fuel tank on a P-47N have an immediate effect on the handling, or was my mind adrift on memory bliss (i.e. wrong)?

I've never noticed that, and I fly my share of P47Ns
