Going to Portland, Oregon
« on: January 19, 2007, 10:35:05 PM »
In their infinite wisdom, my university's Media Board has decided to cough up the cash to send most of the editors of our newspaper to a conference in Portland, Oregon.  Apparently we aren't liberal enough as is :D

We're not going until the weekend of March 11 (I forget the exact dates), but I figured I'd start trying to figure out what might be good things to do, since we do have to organize this for 10 people and that's always best done in advance.

Any good restaurant ideas that are fairly cheap but not disgusting?

How far would you say it is to the Pacific Ocean from downtown Portland?  I am NOT traveling all the way across the continent without seeing how our Manifest Destiny worked out!

Any cool museums or anything like that?  Air or otherwise?

How much cash would you say each person should bring to have a decent time?

Any clubs/dancehalls/raves/whatever that you'd recommend?

And, finally, though I do not know if this will be possible as I don't have the schedule yet, anyone from the area feel like having a beer or two?

Thanks,
Vudak

I spent New Year's Eve 1980 in Portland. I can't remember a thing about the place.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

When going to Portland, you might wish to get out of Portland and go see some of Oregon.

You can't see Oregon from Portland, but you can see it from here:

Portland is maybe 90 miles from the ocean...

If you must stay within the Willamette Valley, go see the Spruce Goose in McMinnville.  It's on your way to the ocean.

if u wanted to, you could hit two of the best aviation museums anywhere on the way to the coast
http://www.sprucegoose.org/ at McMinnville
and
http://www.tillamookair.com/ at Tillamook on the coast.
It is in a hangar that was built to house eight blimps.
tillaMOOK, if that aint manifest destiny nothing is.
also
http://www.pearsonairmuseum.org/ is a 15 minute drive north of Portland and is a  historic airfield & they got some nice stuff there.  The FBO on the field there offers scenic flights around the area pretty cheap.
If you just want a quick trip out to the coast take Rte. 26 west out of town, then turn left on 101 after about 90 minutes & go to either the town of Oceanside or Ebola State Park.
Dont drive that road if its snwoing unless you got chains & a deathwish.
Rte. 6 from McMinnville to Tillamook is worse.

It's about two hours to the beach. I'd recommend Cannon Beach over Seaside. You just head out 26 to get to both and they're very easy to find.

The McMinnville Airport is about a 45 minute drive from downton Portland, but you don't want to make this drive between 7-10am or 4-6 pm due to traffic on a rather small highway. Look up the Evergreen Air Museum on the internet and you'll see that the museum contains enough history to be kinda cool for everyone.

The Tillamook (pronounced "Tillamuck") museum is great for aviation buffs, but not as historical as the Evergreen. Plus, it's another hour's drive out to Tillamook.

Other than that, Portland's a rather sleepy town. Downtown has some nice places on 2nd street close to Burnside and NW 23rd is also a trendy place to go (just south of burnside).

Yeah, i ment Cannon Beach.
Also, i there is snows, maybe Rte. 30 to Astoria is still OK.
The beach there is massive & very near where Lewis & Clark camped over the 1805-1806 winter.
Last time i was there i saw a dead whale on teh beach.
OMG it smelled bad!!!:O :O :O :O :O :O

went there over 4th of july this past year.  Stayed at Seaside for 1 night, then hit tillamook, and evergreen.  Fantastic place.  Counting the time till I can go back.
