P51D vs Spitfire mkXIV

well this isnt a good guage, but i survive and get more kills, and enjoy my sorties more in a 51d, granted this is alot of pilot preference but can surely still be used as an indication to some degree

ofcourse people are going to argue that i dont know how to fly the spit, maybe so, maybe thats because the 51d is the better plane?

good discussion tho, although when i fly, im usually flying a low bnz, e-fighting style, and am still weary of the spits ability to grab E from nowhere

Don't be too sure about that.  I've recently fought two Spit XIV's (on seperate occasions) with a Spit XVI, both in left turn fights and, while I did win, the XIV put up a good fight turning left.

Considering that they were almost as good in a left turn as a XVI I'd say the Spit wins vs. the P-51D.

LAst week I owned a spit 14 in a one on one, total fluke lol.

Thing I noticed, while the p51 at low speed may want to roll over and nose in, the spit 14 will do it alot sooner.

Also it seems if you push the 14 to much you can lose it and it may be hard to recover.


I pick the 51, but then again, I love flying it.

1 on 1 .. equal pilots.. pony doesn't have a chance.  Admit it you 51 lovers.  It is perked for a reason.

Climb/Acceleration .. Spit14
Turn Rate ..  Spit14
Turn Radius ..  Spit14
Speed ..  Spit14   (7k+ spit is faster .. on deck 51 is only 4mph faster )
Armament .. Spit14 (you really want to argue against  hispanos in this game?)

Agreed, all things being equal, Spit XIV wins hands down. As a better plane overall, the Pony is much more usefull. It's 2 different questions really.

not so much in the 1 on 1 spit vs pony sense, more in the general MA dogfighting sense which is better suited to flying, killing and not dying.

Well, XIV has nasty handling bellow 150mph or so. At 120mph you pretty much hit the limit.  It needs gentle hand on throttle or nose will just jump around whenever you change throttle setting or go WEP. Slow verticals with combat trim on are certain death. It will simply refuse to roll to the left. Manual trim does help a little but not much.
Spit has all advantages at high and medium speeds. If Pony manages to slow down the fight it has very good chance to win, but it has to come that far first.

I'd still rate XIV more lethal, although if you consider easy of handling (in comparison to XIV), range, etc, yeah Pony might be better choice...

I'd love to see some DA action on this question between some of the better sticks in this game.  Widewing and Murdr leap to mind Schatzi and Gosth.  But it's fun to watch them fly anything so long as they're not on the other team and in my general vicinity
