Joystick recommendation for new user
« on: February 04, 2007, 12:00:35 AM »
I am a new user to Aces High and would like to get opinions on what joystick works well to get the full experience of the game.  Are there joysticks made that have foot controls or am I best served with a stick only model?  Please feel free to share with this rookie.

Stick recommendations kinda go along with what your budget will be.
Generally you're looking for as a minimum  1 8 way hat switch for views, a throttle control of some sort and rudder input (either twist or rocker style)
I'd check with either Saitek or Thrustmaster as both companies enjoy a good reputation and have good starter sticks, Saitek also offers a good HOTAS control @ a reasonable price (I myself used their old X36 for 3 years, not bad for a $40 refurb).  If you want to go full throttle look @ CH Products, a complete set from them with stick, throttle and rudder will run you past $300 but most people will tell you that they last forever.

Avoid Logitech like it's the plague.

I currently use, and recommend, the Saitek X52. It's about $100 but it includes the stick and seperate throttle. It's a really nice joystick and you can program it so you never even need to touch the keyboard except to type messages.

If you don't want to spend that much the Saitek Aviator is much cheaper, about $40, and still has lots of buttons to program. I've never used it but the X52 and Aviator were the two sticks I was down to when I was making my choice on what to buy.

Saitek's Website: http://www.saitekusa.com

If you want to read some reviews of the X52 just search for "saitek x52 review" on google and you'll get a ton of hits. I never did find a review for the Aviator and that was one of the reasons I ended up getting the X52.

hmm, I bought a ps33 saitek and it was only $40.  I checked out the higher end one with the separate throttle control and found it to be rather HUGE to fly with , at least holding it in the store.

Even the ps33 stick is way too long.  Unless you have monster hands, you could never fill the entire stick.  Which makes it a bit difficult to use the hat and fire buttons.  The joystick itself is a bit light which ads to the difficulty.

But the options are few and far between.  It was the best one sitting on the shelf, and my experience has been to stay away from logitech joysticks per several friends and through the forums on here.

The lesser of two evils I'm afraid.

The PS33 has a nice button below the hat that allows you to do an upper view hat quickly with no need to use a mouse or ir tracker for viewing all around you.

It has a nice little flip up switch for primary fire by default, that you could easily map to bombs that keeps you from accidentally bombing.

I'm probably going to mod this stick and then it will be a great stick.  I may rip it apart and shorten it, or mount it to my desk using a quick flip vice type of holder.

Of course, I have already taken a very small circle of sandpaper and super glued it to the center of the hat.  I love mods and the minimum this thing needs (really all sticks) is a piece of sandpaper glued to the hat for sweaty situations! :)

Good luck in your venture.  BTW the ps33 if I didn't mention is $40 new at bad buys.

The X52 stick is adjustable. The handrest, and the pinky button too. on the stick move up and down. I had no problem adjusting mine to fit perfectly.

Ooooooo min I didnt know that. You can adjust the height of the sticks?

They made both of these joysticks look like kids toys.  I guess they are? :(

sniff...

Oh well, I enjoy them just the same :)

You can't adjust the height of the stick. You can adjust the height of the handrest that your hand sits on when you are gripping the stick. It just makes using the joystick more comfortable. I raised it high enough that I could reach all the buttons on the top of the stick without adjusting my grip.

The X52 stick is adjustable  I have a X52 and have been very happy with it.  I used the software from the the Saitek Web site, and down loaded a couple of profiles from Aces High users & modified them for my own use.  Go for it.:noid :aok
