Decided to film one in case needed. Profile should be similiar in any plane. The deciding factors will be view over nose and optimal rate of decent. The keys (IMO) are to establish the "angle off" and rate of decent. You dont want to approach a carrier from dead astern. The better the view over the nose the smaller that angle can be. Planes with a poor forward vis over the nose and a "nose high" landing profile require a great angle off. The second aspect is proper configuration for landing. You can either establish a decent rate with full flaps or leave a notch or two. Ideally I like a speed in the 105-120 range with a 2200-2500 rate of decent. The key is to have your rate of decent established before you roll onto final from your base leg. Ideally you'll find your flying such that your stabalized right on your landing target with it clearly visible. In planes where your view over the nose is limited your actually executing a circular approach with the rollout literally on flare and view out the front quarterpanel of cockpit....

You missed the wire!

Well, if you had used a plane with a hook it might have helped.

Added my own film below with 100% F6f load out CV TO and landing.
I used short field approach with full flap and slow speed. Probably safer to have another 10 mph on the ASI. Using the up arrow on the view on finals you still get to see the CV

Those are some pretty steep dives, uh, rates of descent.

Carrier landings are very forgiving in AH. Here's a film that gives some historical commentary and a different approach to carrier loops.

IRL the FSO is actually in command of the aircraft for a carrier trap. Landing on carrier in AH is actually pretty easy. The plane in front of me "non final" is a mustang...."we" (71st) operate jugs tiffies etc routinely off carriers for rearms if appropriate to the map...

This wasnt really set up as a "demonstration"....with a F4U or similiar I tend to use a circular approach with the flare out literally over the threshold. I can still easily execute a bolter if needed but even if I'm late on the wire the plane stops easily. Any steep "straight in" approach is fundementally incorrect, but not hard to execute. You can also use a shallower approach but that creates a few issues...the carrier is more likely to switch heading. The landing takes more time which may create fuel issues....your establishing final outside the defensive envelope of the fleet. I've been chased all the way back to carrier quite often. The ability to go from a full combat orientation to transition to landing configuration quickly and somewhat vertically is often benificial....

what I don't understand is why when I land and hit the cables does it seem that my plane stops, the carrier keeps on going and my plane rolls off the fantail??? I have no problems setting down on the carrier, it's the rolling off the deck after a successful landing that gets me. I finally resorted to just landing wheels up. At least I can land my kills that way.

Make sure that when your wheels touch down you immediately turn throttle ALL the way down and put your brakes on.

On a CV, u can actually back up a plane if needed, due to the headwind the CV is steaming into. We use to have to do it on a fully loaded F4U prior to the F4U upgrade.

To back up ...

Spawn a plane on the deck.

Release brakes.

Increase throttle ever so slowly ... at a certain point (don't remember the RPMs and I do it by feel) the plane will start to roll backwards.

What is happneing, I think, is that you need to bring the throttle just to the point where you would start to roll forward ... then back it off a bit and you will start to roll backwards ... its like releasing auto-brakes or something.

Another thing to remember ... the CV is ALWAYS steaming into a headwind ... no matter what direction it is steering.
