Observations using new ZoneAlarm 7 Int.Suiet

No AntiVirus updates and  warning in Windows Security Center, that ZoneAlarm anti virus is in need of update .
 I also see that when running an anti virus scan that it only scans 12,000 files . My PC has over 200,000 files on it ,
that NOD 32 scans completely. On using AOL's free version of Kaspersky anti virus , it scans over 195,000 files completely, and auto-updates every hour , also gives scaned files reports upon completion.
 ZA's version  7 seems to be a stripped down beta & at best, "a step down in anti virus security and saftey " ...
 I decided to discontiue using ZA when the CA anti virus updating problem started a few weeks ago, and I find the new ZA version 7
not any better .....
 Uninstaller  leaves a complete mess ....
 
 I have atleast 10 months left on my ZA Internet Secuirty paid subscription , but I would rather not fool around with ZA at this point.
 
 The new ZA 7 's firewall seems much better , at least it will allow MSNBC videos to run ..... LOL

i have used Antivir PE for a long time and it is perfect. It has 1 prosses running and you can turn that off if you want to.(say for game play)
I would recomend Antivir Befor any other.

Zonealarm has always made substandard applications. Fullheartedly _not_ recommended.

I've been reccomending Zonealarm free to my clients for years and everyone's been happy. I use ZA Pro myself and so far V7.0 is working just fine. Originally I used ZA Free, but had problems with Aces High, so I switched to the pro version which hasn't had those problems.

I don't use the suite version. Never liked ZA's antivirus. I reccomend using AVG Free instead. Works like a champ for me.

There you said it.. With ZA you have to get the paid version to get basic functionality which others offer for free. For example Comodo..

Actually having one prgram, in this case Aces High, not connect properly, doesn't say that ZA produces substandard programs, not at all.

None of my other programs, or any I tested for clients had any problems with ZA FREE. My clients have been running ZA FREE for years with virtually no problems, except for a few user-induced problems.

I problably should have mentioned that the Aces High problem happen 3-4 years ago. Oh, well, I'm old... :)

The FREE version of ZA works with Aces high now-a-days. This was an older version. I still run the PRO version because a few of my clients use it, so I have to use it also to keep myself up-to-date with all the PRO features. However, on the other five systems on my net, I run ZA Free.


Hopefully, that clarifies things fer ya....

P.S. I don't use ZA FREE's automatic update feature. I prefer to have my clients get a little more involved with making sure their privacy/anti-malware programs are updated properly by doing it themselves. It sorta keeps their own protection at the forefront of their minds, and helps keep them from making poor choices while online.

have used ZA basic ( Free version ) and ZA Pro since it came out, do not care much for the antivirus ( use NOD32 instead )

but love the software firewall as a backup to my hardwire firewall in my router....... no problems what so ever, running in stealth mode......

wabbit, I remember back 2 or 3 years when we got that patch update in AH and it affected ZA users, but HTC quickly fixed that issue...........

I've used zone alarm free version firewall before, never tried their AV but I wasn't too impressed. I approach my PC as "the less the better" I just use windows firewall, Nod 32 AV (the best AV I've ever used), PC Tools Spyware Doctor & I'm good to go.

 I used to use Norton AV, Spybot S&D, Adaware, Spyware Blaster & others....many others. But over the years I have become a minimalist where my PC is concerned & that combination I use has never let me down.

That doesn't surprise me at all. It might have been right around the time, I quit Aces. At the time, it was easier to go to the pro version only because I needed to support clients using that version.  Just signed up within the last two weeks. Just couldn't stay away any more. My cougar just about broke the bank, but I'm happy with it so far, and soon as I can put together some extra cash, I'll get a USB CHPRO Rudder set to replace my gameport CHPRO rudders.
I can't wait until I have REAL toe-brakes.

Currently, I'm just a target drone. I'm the guy you see screaming down through the clouds, zipping past my target and ending up as a blackened smear on the landscape below. Things will get better, ( I sincerely hope...).

I know what cha mean by less is better. One thing you might or might not know. The windows firewall does a piss-poor job of stopping outgoing connects. That's the main reason I still use ZA Free. It's also rumored to give microsloth free access in & out, but I haven't confirmed that myself, just read about it here and there. (In case it isn't obvious, I just DO NOT TRUST microsloth AT ALL.

I still use Spybot, Spywareblaster, AVG Free and ZA Free. I understand the 'less is better' thinking though. I'm just too dammed cheap to spend money when the free programs work just fine.

I'll be testing the comodo products sometime this year, just to see how good they are, but for now, my clients and I just happy with the freebies I currently use.

As long as the programs you're using work for ya, and you're happy, that's what really counts.

I think it's doubtful MS programmers put a backdoor in the firewall, but anything is possible. The people that wrote the ZA firewall program might have done the same thing; who's to say unless you have deconstructed the program & know what you're looking at.

 I'm not too worried, I have my Windows firewall disabled anyway because my DSL modem has a built in firewall too & my CPU has the built in buffer overrun protection. About the only thing I'm not protected from is a determined one on one attack from a hacker & how many average PC's are? I'm not a big enough fish for most of them to bother with.

 As far as the free stuff goes, I agree Avast, & a combination of Adaware, Spyware Blaster, & a few other spyware programs will keep you fairly free from nasties.

If you use a router with NAT and Stateful Packet Inspection (ie your standard off the shelf $100 ones), and reasonable quality AV then a personal firewall (PF) is a waste of time.

Most modern good AV software stops buffer overflow attacks. Some will also lock down common exploit ports  PF's are not guaranteed to stop all outbound traffic, the only thing they arr guaranteed to stop is legitimate applications that play by the rules.

It's completely wrong to think you don't need a personal firewall if you have NAT and antivirus.

Without the PF you will have no control over which program connects where. You won't know if you get a trojan infection or spyware etc. That is unless you type netstat -a every day to the prompt. Even then the damage might already be done if you get a trojan dropper and it's downloaded 100 new bugs to your machine.

And no, AV softwares do not detect all of them.
