You can also use the utility "msconfig" to check what is running at startup - not everything is in the startup folder. Go to Start/Run type msconfig then press enter. You will be able to selectively choose autoexec.bat, config.sys entries as well as win.ini and system.ini. Check all entries in the load and run section of win.ini, then go to the startup tab and remove any applications that you don't need at startup. Make sure you know which ones you are removing - if you are not sure, leave it.

Mr Daddog .. The reason I mention Winamp or any add on's ... because I think their notorious for creating problems, unless they are install correctly. [No anti virus no anything, running in the background except explorer and systray] And all the add ons that go with will screw up a lot of things .. it has happen to me a few times. If you try every thing else and the problem is still their ..try uninstalling it .. and see how every thing works. Its no big deal to install it again. However,if I have to bet, the problems will be with "fast find".

Ok here is the scoop.
I downloaded both wintop and process monitor 95. Great programs!

Twice the stuttering took place when I had wintop on and it "did not" list anything using up the CPU.

I will use the pm95 now, though I am not sure what the numbers under "usage" mean.

I did a search for fastfind could not find it. Then went to add/remove as lep suggested and found it there. There was not an option to remove it, but only disable it.

Hope that does the trick.

How do u stop "fast find" ?

The usual place it loads from (in Office 97 anyway) is from the startup folder
(C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp). You should find a shortcut to it
there. You can just delete it (the shortcut) or use MSConfig.exe and a
selective startup to disable it as well.

Best thing though is to run Office setup again, do a custom install and
un-select it for installation. Then office setup will completely remove it from
your system.

Office97 integrates pretty deep in your system. Getting rid of it isn't that easy.

In Win2k it's called Indexing Service. Under W9x it's called Findfast, and is usually put in the Startup folder.
