Historical book estimate
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:18:19 PM »
My step dad was perusing Ebay last night and came across what he thinks is a peculiar picture in a bible that he owns.  My family is by no means religious therefore this bible means little to us except for the fact it is from 1876 and was owned by his grandparents grandparents.  I was wondering if anyone could give me some estimates if I gave more information or if they have contacts that would know anything about it.  It's in quite good condition considering it's 130 years old.

take it to a rare book shop.  There are three in Denver.  Get estimates from all three.

I emailed the Colorado Historical Society so I'll see what they say tomorrow.  Those are good places to start though, I'll see what my parents want to do.

Family Bibles are worth more in sentimental value as for most of the older ones are kept as a family Tree ... a 130 yo bible wouldnt be worth that much.

my Family's bible dates to the early 1600's   and even at that old it isnt worth very much when compared to other books from that period .

Yeah, not much.
It's the all-time bestseller in the Western World. Unless it's a specifically interesting printing, it's just a nice old book to have around.

Historical Society won't know much about appraising old books. Heck, I don't even know that much myself, and I get paid to do codicology.
