Stillwell, worst evar?
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:07:06 AM »
Recently i read Clair Chennault's book Way of a Fighter cause i thought i would learn some stuff about the pre-AVG CBI action which i had wondered about for a while.
It was a good book & if you can find a copy of it u r a lucky d00d.
A lot of interesting info is in there, but the recurring theme is that Stillwell was really really bad & is responsible for the eventual communist takeover of China & all sorts of other things that were bad.
I haven't read any other stuff by CBI commanders or historians, just other CBI pilots of lower rank so i'm wondering if Chennault's characterization is accurate...

From what little I have read, Vinegar Joe had a nasty habit of blaming others for his own mistakes, issuing contradictory orders, and disregarding the well being of his troops.  Other than that, he was a great guy . . .
