Need help
« on: January 28, 2007, 09:40:45 PM »
Just a few hours ago I downloaded AHII. The first thing I did was change the controls. I guess that was a mistake.

Everytime I tried to take off I couldent even get off the ground. I would start the engine and throttle up and the plane would twist right for a second then head left and crash or go in a circle untill It hit something.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing AHII to see if that would reset the controls but that didnt help.

I ran out and bought a joystick, but that just gave me another problem. I finally got off the ground by using the rudder to keep the plane strieght. I got maybe 70ft off the ground before I tried to tip the wings to test the joystick. The plane turned sideways it seemed like I lost all control then it stalled and crashed. I have yet to get off the runway sence.

I'm sure I have the joystick set up right, I've calibrated (sp) it several times. One thing I noticed (and I'm sure this is a big thing) is if I push the stick far left, I see the stick pop up on the screen. I'm guessing this means that the game is reading the axis' sideways. Left=foward, right=backwards ect..

The joystick is a saitek ST290 pro with the latest drivers installed. All the buttons, the throttle, and the rudder work properly. I think I have two seperate issues. 1: some factor causing the plane to pull left while on the runway. Be it rudder calibration, breaks, or another factor. 2: the game not reading the joystick X and Y axis' correctly.

So does anyone have any adivse?

Ok I fixed the joystick axis problem, but the otherone is still keeping me from flying. When I start a sortie I check my gauges. My rudded is I notch right of center, my allerions are full right, and my elleroins (sp?) are all the way up. This is the default every time I don't know if that is right or wrong.

Hello MrBreeze!

Make sure you have the Joystick axis mapped to Roll/Pitch/Yaw and not the the TRIM functions (TRIM is just for fine tuning, not controlling the plane). The little red lines in the cockpit show the TRIM settings... not the actual flight surfaces. To check if those are moving properly, go to external view (F3) and watch them move while on the ground.
Read HERE for more info on stick setup.

This is the "standard" mapping:
X axis: Analog Input Aileron (Roll)
Y Axis: Analog Input Elevator (Pitch)
Z Axis: THROTTLE1
Z Rotation: Analog Input Rudder (Yaw)

Your plane pulling to the left at takeoff is completely normal. Aces High has a very realistic modelling, that includes propwash and engine torque effects on takeoff. The clockwise rotating prop will try to make your plane roll/yaw left.

To counter it on takeoff, pull back a bit on your Joystick to lock the tailwheel and throttle up slowly. Then use the rudder (twist) to keep the plane going straight. When you gained a little speed (around 100 mph) relax the stick back to center slowly and gain a little more speed before lifting up slowly. While youre slow, do not try to climb/maneuver, as that will make you stall out.

More detailed help on takeoff, games setup, flying and much more can be found on the Trainer Corps Homepage.

Welcome to the game!

Ok I fixed the joystick problem I had the X and Y axis' set backwards.  Thanks for the info on dealing with take-off. I normally use auto takeoff now though.

Now i've ran into another problem that I think may actually be a bug, that or my joystick is damaged. All night last night I took off using auto takeoff and used auto pilot alot. Today I come on and go to the training arena. I hit the runway, I see the auto takeoff message, and things start off normall. Im near the end of the run way when I realize somthing is wrong. The auto takeoff had shut off. I haden't touched the joystick or any key. I was just setting back smoking a cig and watching. So I took control of the plane pulled her off the runway pulled up the gear and set auto-incline at a slow steady incline. I leaned back and watched and to my horror :(  auto incline disabled itself. So I turned on the regular auto pilot same thing.

I started wondering if it was just because I was in the training arena, so I went to another arena Late era blue. The same thing happened. Im going to re-calibrate my joystick and see if that effects it.

Thats not a bug, thats your Joystick spiking slighly.
You should be able to fix this by adding a little deadband to the spiking axis.

Mark the X axis in Controller Setup, then check the ADVANCED box - tune up the  Dead Band a slider width or two. Same process for the Y axis. Recalibrate stick.

Then try again. If that didnt help, also check out the Z rotation axis (rudder).

Good advice to check the rudder axis. From what I recall rudder never use to kill auto climb/pilot/takeoff. It does now.
